Texas Democrats have good day in two courts
AAS article 8/4/06
DeLay can't be replaced; new congressional map due soon.
Two separate courts Thursday gave Texas Democrats a glimmer of hope of recouping a couple of congressional seats as part of their party's uphill battle to take back Congress.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans ruled that the Republican Party cannot replace former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land, on the November ballot, as DeLay and GOP officials had wanted.

Several Democratic leaders were on hand Thursday in Austin as federal judges held hearings about the congressional district map. One was Lloyd Doggett of Austin, who expressed optimism but wouldn't say what his next political move might be.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, speaking after the hearing in Austin on Thursday about the redrawing of the congressional map, defended the state's proposed map, which would have split Travis County among three Republicans. He denied that partisanship was at play in that mapping.

A three-judge panel in Austin trying to fix the state's congressional map signaled that it might make it harder for San Antonio Republican Henry Bonilla to win re-election — and also might try to restore more of Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett's political base in Travis County. The judicial panel's map could come as soon as today.

Long article worth reading. Covers the whole DeLay stuck on the ballot issue too. Even if SCOTUS looks at his case for appeal, it's going to be October before he could get a ruling. He is so screwed!
