Kinky violates open container law during parade
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 07:27 AM by PDittie
Anybody got the pictures?

DALLAS — Gubernatorial hopeful Kinky Friedman rode in a St. Patrick's Day parade car Saturday with his trademark black hat and burning cigar — plus a beer in his hand, an apparent violation of the state's open container law.

A spokeswoman for Friedman, the author and musician running as an independent, acknowledged that the candidate drank from a can of Guinness handed to him. State law prohibits opened alcoholic beverages in the passenger area of a motor vehicle. The Class C misdemeanor carries a maximum fine of $500.

"Guinness is the drink that kept the Irish from taking over the world. It would be unthinkable not to have a Guinness during a St. Patrick's Day parade. In fact, it would be spiritually wrong," Friedman said in a statement issued by spokeswoman Laura Stromberg.

Dallas police didn't cite Friedman, and Lt. Rick Watson said Friedman can't be ticketed after the fact because it wasn't witnessed by an officer.

Photographs taken by The Dallas Morning News showed Friedman, who wasn't driving, holding the beer and appearing to take a drink.

1. ha ha
We know he can't behave. I can't wait for the other blunders in this campaign. I fully expect him to show up without pants at some event. That isn't illegal of course, unless he's "neked" underneath.

Kinky should just face up to the fact that's he's an alcoholic. Ne needs to dry out, not run for Governor. The Governor's office would just kill him.

2. This guy is just one F&^%in joke.
He makes ALL politicians look bad, even those that are good.

He is a one-liner, know-nothing, do-nothing, did-nothing, idiot of a candidate.

3. Two words: "Jesse Ventura"
I'm supporting Chris Bell until the wheels fall off, don't get me wrong. But Bell needs to step up his game something fierce, because Friedman is a framing machine who has now cast himself in the "Everyman" role.

I've got a couple of kickass pictures of Kinky from the Dallas parade yesterday. Will post them soon.

4. Tell us how you really feel!
:)

I agree. Many, many smart people think he's terrific and will pull votes away from Perry, but I think he'll take votes away from our guy, Bell. I'm NOT happy.

6. I still bet he doesn't make it to the ballot
No way in hell this campaign is disciplined enough to get enough valid signatures.

7. Don't confuse Kinky with his grassroots organizers.
I think he will get on. His grassroots organizers in Dallas that I know are deadly organized and serious. Check out their many signing efforts in Dallas:

8. I'm not saying underestimate them
I know many of them are serious, but still they have a huge task ahead of them, and the more negative press Kinky gets the harder it gets. I know some Austin Travis folks that have quit the campaign. The more we can do to educate his petition carriers that Kinky doesn't even vote, and that he's really a conservative republican, the more folks get turned off to him.

Expose the drunk liar, stinky Kinky.

9. What a bunch of idiots.
Just think what they can do if they would put their energy to something good.

Instead if he gets on the ballot, and he will lose, they would go away never to be heard from again.

I just which they would go away now.

They think this is a game.

Idiots.

10. Some of them are my friends, and quite honestly I resent that remark.
These are people who have been involved with Dem politics before and will continue to be involved with Dem politics. Yet they are idealistic enough to believe that Kinky will make a difference. I don't agree with them but I have some sympathy for their viewpoint. Honestly, trashing Kinky voters instead of attempting to understand them gets us absolutely no-where. I have the same problem with people who hop on DU and issue blanket condemnations of Republicans. Labeling people, be they Kinky voters or be they Republicans, as "stupid" is in itself stupid. Attempting to understand where they are coming from might get us somewhere.

15. Yeah, they do.
(((shakes head sadly)))

What can I say, they don't believe in making political calculations. They are mostly animal lovers and they are very connected to what Kinky has done for animals. I will continue to chip away at them ... but they are "true believers." They're not stupid by any means-- Kinky has managed to tap into their feeling that *both* Dems and Reps are to some degree "more of the same" (although they WILL grant you that Dems are better than Reps) and that it will take an outsider to change the system. It's idealism through and through.

16. Also
he has convinced some dems who should know better that he'll pull votes away from Perry and that this will help Bell win. This somehow makes sense to some people. Someone needs to explain this strategy to me because I do NOT get it. All this does it make me upset to think about it!!

29. I was told by...
a higher-up whose name I won't mention that having Kinky on the ballot will probably help the Democrats. Not in the Governor's race but down ballot. They said that most of the Kinky supporters are angry and angry people tend to throw out the incumbents. And most of the incumbents are Republicans. So while it won't necessarily help the Democrats in the Governor's race. It will help the Democrats running for Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor, State Representative etc.

11. Kinky is just imitating his good buddy little bush.
The laws done't apply to them. In my opinion, Kinky is a repug. He voted for bush in 2004 and goes to see bush in the White House and smokes illegal Cuban cigars on the Truman Balcon with shrub. He has the same sense of being above the law theat the bushies do.

It would be unthinkable not to have a Guinness during a St. Patrick's Day parade.

Is Ireland an important trading partner of Texas? Kink thinks they are a bunch of drunks.

As long as you are drinking and driving why should it be illegal for someone else in the vehicle to have a drink.

18. Like it or not......
Texas was about to lose billions in federal highway dollars if they didnt pass the open container years ago.

Hell, they werent concerned about how many lives it could save or the message about drinking and driving, it was money.

Besides, kinky is still an idiot.

20. Kinky aside, Is Strayhorn bigger trouble for us or a bigger help?
She'll pull votes away from Perry. So will she pull enough votes away and then Bell can end up with the most votes in the end to win? The special session on education is a big variable. If and when Perry even makes that happen this spring.

And then, besides all that, democrats are going to have to put in a lot of time and effort on the Bell campaign to get him elected. I haven't heard anything from the Bell campaign since the primary and I'm on his email list.

21. I think that to a large extent is up to Bell
I think that if he really looks like a viable candidate by the fall Carole 4names will be harming Perry most. But if Bell doesn't look like a serious contender, then I see a lot of Democratic dollars and votes going to Strayhorn as the best way to take down Perry.

22. Polling indicates that Carole takes more votes from Perry, but Kinky takes
more votes from Bell.

With that said, I also agree that the manner in which Bell conducts his campaign will have a significant effect on how many Democratic votes Carole 4n3p can steal. If the Bell campaign is run in a manner that Carole 4n3p takes a significant chunk of votes from us, it tells you Bell was going to lose anyway.

We have every reason to believe that Bell should win a three-way race between NeoCon/ChristoFascist Perry, Republican/Independent Carole 4n3p, and Democrat Bell. Kinky's presence on the ballot would most likely Naders us.

I don't see much excitement on his website. I don't see much of anything yet.

I expect more. He needs lots of bucks pouring in. I'm a big Bell fan and I'm impatient.

25. Yep, I've met him and I'm a true believer.
That's why I'm impatient! I'm going to be putting most of my effort in terms of my time into Nick Lampson's campaign (I'm in Congressional District 22), but I made a large donation to Chris Bell's campaign immediately after the primary election. I hope others are doing the same. He is going to need a large infusion of cash to get this thing going in a big way.

26. Also, with respect to Carole 4n3p's candidacy, it is almost impossible for
us to win a two-way race (Perry vs. Bell) but we have a fighting chance in a three-way race (Perry vs. Bell vs. 4n3p) so her candidacy pretty much cannot conceivably hurt our chances of winning in November no matter who she ultimately takes more votes from.

27. 3 way race good, 4 way race bad
I agree with you Czolgosz that Carole 4n3p helps us. Ha ha, it took me a bit to understand the 4Names3Parties (4n3p).

Dean Rindy, political consultant, did a very good analysis for Gammage on that very issue. In a 3 way race (two republicans, one Democrat), we win. If stinky Kinky makes the ballot, things get more complicated. We absolutely have to keep attacking Kinky because he will spoil this race for us. And the conservative republican, stinky Kinky doesn't even vote. And when he does vote he votes for republicans like bush. He is not a progressive liberal by any stretch of the imagination. Plus he's an alcoholic and won't admit that. That Kinky is a disaster waiting to happen.

28. Great link. When Kinky vows to post the 10 Commandments in TX classrooms,
do you think he's talking about the Catholic version, the Protestant version, or the Hebrew version (or do you think he's just talking out of his ass and he probably doesn't even know what a hornets' nest he'd kick up with this moronic plan)?:

Protestant
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
5. Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.

Catholic
1. I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have strange gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
3. Remember thou keep the Sabbath Day.
4. Honor thy Father and thy Mother.
5. Thou shalt not kill.
6. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
7. Thou shalt not steal.
8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's goods.

Hebrew
1. I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
2. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; Thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; And showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love Me and keep My commandments.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work. But the seventh day is the Sabbath in honour of the Lord thy God; on it thou shalt not do any work, neither thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother; in order that thy days may be prolonged upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
