My Filing Statement, December 5, 2005
December 5, 2005

Grassroots Texans have always believed that government belongs to the people. All over Texas today people from all walks of life are fed up with the rip-off of their democracy and they want it back. The Texas Constitution (Art. 4, Sec. 22) directs the Attorney General of Texas to protect democracy from corporate special-interest government and gives him the tools of office with which to do it. I've received all my education and lived all my life in Texas; I love this state; and I've vowed to honor the education and training Texas gave me by using them to answer the moral imperative of our time, to restore government to the people. Those coming before us who founded self-governing democracy intended that it last forever. For my part I will not let it go down, and my part is clear to me. This state belongs to all the people, and they are entitled to a people's lawyer as Attorney General who値l fight to restore it to them.

Today I知 filing my application for a place on the Texas ballot in 2006 as a Democrat. The Democratic Party is historically the party that raises its strong arm on behalf of the people against the powerful, fighting to ensure that the vision of the Declaration of Independence of 7-4-76 lives always as the goal and the promise of this Great Society. The professional cynics of the embedded corporate media need to open their eyes and understand that ordinary people everywhere are fed up with power-grabbing Bushite government in both the United States AND Texas. With great pride I値l carry the Democratic Party banner in my fight to restore government to the people of Texas as their Attorney General, and will open that banner to all the good people of this state, regardless of current party affiliation, who are sick and tired of government by one-party corporate mouthpieces, and who want their democracy back.

Fighting to restore government to the people means: defending the people against the predatory exercise of monopoly power by big corporations, instead of protecting the corporations by winking and looking the other way. It means: defending democracy from being ripped off by the buying and selling of public votes for private gain. It means: defending the Constitution and Bill of Rights of the people of Texas. It means: fighting to preserve the ownership of government by we the people, using the tools of office that the founders of Texas wisely provided to the people痴 lawyer, the Attorney General, for just such purpose. This is my State, I love my State, I知 fighting mad over what is being done to it, and now I知 going to do something about it.

4. I'll file a brief report
David held a short press conference at the State Party Headquarters this morning at 11:00 a.m. We held it in one of the conference rooms inside the party headquarters. David started out by reading his statement above, with lots of passion. As David usually does.

We had a nice turnout of about 10 supporters standing behind David when he presented Texas Democratic Party Chair Charles Soechting his filing forms and filing fee. There were at least three media entities represented. I only recognized NOKOA, a local community newspaper here in Austin. There was one TV station but I didn't catch the logo. The publisher of NOKOA, Akwasi Evans asked several good questions at the press conference. The main one I liked, was how candidates compete with the free press that the current incumbents get. He listed as an example, the free press provided on our local PBS station KLRU, for Greg Abbott last week. KLRU ran a series on Greg Abbott under the Texas Monthly guise. That question led to a little discussion on the power of corporations controlling our democracy. David's answer was that we have to reach the people and that papers like NOKOA that are independent community newspapers are key to getting around these corporate monopolies. We never stop trying to get our message out.

Charles said some good words about how if David had been our attorney general that that DOJ memo about the illegal redistricting would not have remained hidden. That's because David would have been fighting for the people of Texas and not for the republican party.

We need David now more than ever!

14. Here's a picture of David and the State Party Chair

That's David on the right and Charles Soechting our State Party Chair on the left. This was before the press conference. Once it got started, we stood behind David and I didn't get any more shots. I'm sure there will be some more on David's web site soon.
