Hey Austin and Central Texas: We need to have brunch!!!
How about this Sunday, November 5th? 10:00am I'm open for suggestions as to location. Locations south of the river for the benefit of some *cough*Shaz8cough* will be considered. ;)

Protest To Counter KKK Anti-Gay Rally
by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff

Posted: November 1, 2005 5:00 pm ET

(Austin, Texas) An LGBT civil rights group will hold a vigil to protest Saturday's Ku Klux Klan anti-gay-marriage rally in Austin, Texas.

No Nonsense in November said they are planning a peaceful counter demonstration.

"We will speak for ourselves and not engage the Klan in their rhetoric," No Nonsense leader Glen Maxey tells the Houston Chronicle. "It will be a peaceful, nonviolent demonstration."

Police Tuesday said they will take no chances the two protests will get out of control. The city last week granted a request by the white supremacist Klan for space on the plaza outside City Hall.

No Nonsense in November will be allowed to hold its counter protest on a bridge in the middle of Town Lake, about half a block away. The group also has scheduled a Sunday rally at the Texas Capitol.

The American White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan have also pledged that its rally will be peaceful, but warned counter protesters could attempt to provoke violence.

"Our speech will not be inflammatory," the Klan said in its request for permission to use the plaza, "but we all know the reputation of the name of the KKK, so we expect anti-Klan demonstrators to be there who may become violent. We certainly don't want any of our people hurt nor any city officials. We just want to come and encourage people to vote for Christian Family Values and against legalized homosexual marriage in the state of Texas."

Voters will go to the polls November 8, three days after the Klan rally, to cast ballots on the gay marriage ban, that would also bar civil unions.

Turnout historically is low for amendment elections in Texas. In 2003, just 12 and a-half percent of registered voters cast ballots. This year, though, both supporters and opponents of the marriage amendment predict a high turnout.

Early voting o the measure began last week.

Earlier this month 22 elected officials from the Austin area announced their opposition to the measure. A similar group of politicians in Houston also called on voters to reject the amendment.

While supporters of the amendment used churches to promote passage, gay and lesbian rights groups ran television ads using same-sex couples to speak against it.

There are an estimated 43,000 same-sex couples in Texas.

The state already has a law banning same-sex marriage, but supporters of the amendment say that by that putting it in the state constitution judges would be prevented from overturning the law.

Among the supporters are Gov. Rick Perry. In June Perry signed the legislation sending the amendment to voters. Although his signature was not needed Perry said that the symbolism was important.

24. Oh, I was just griping. starting my day off right!
I no longer have a license & to add insult to injury I keep finding all these fabulous deals on vehicles. I tell myself to remember all the money I'm saving, but it really doesn't work that well. I do get to pass myself off as a concerned environmentalist which is great until you try to go somewhere on a weekend.

26. Things are going to be crazy with the holidays
How about we try to have a DU group meetup at the Travis County Holiday party on Dec. 13th. They haven't put it up on the calendar but I know the date and place. It's Threadgills on Tuesday Dec. 13th in the evening of course.

We can keep checking for it here
http://www.traviscountydemocrats.org/calendar.php

Another possibility is a fundraiser for David Van Os on December the 5th. That's a Saturday and Jim Hightower will be the guest speaker. He's very entertaining and David could use the support. Don't have an exact location but it will be in Austin.

27. And everyone is welcome at the Keep Austin Blue meetup
We're meeting a week early this month so there will be no conflict with Thanksgiving. Our speakers are Lou DuBose, journalist and author of books on Tom DeLay, Shrub, and Karl Rove; and congressional candidate John Courage. Wednesday, Novemebr 16. Mother Egan's, 715 West 6th Street. Social hour begins 6:30, speakers 7:15ish.

Yeah, I know Maureen Dowd is speaking somewhere else that same evening... we've extended an invitation to MoDo to come by when she's finished and have a drink with us.
