2. We're at 1997 now
I'm condensing a message Debbie Russell sent Austin Against War list

http://icasualties.org/oif/

If we hit 2000 deaths Monday - Friday:

We will go to the federal building at 5pm THAT DAY* and have a vigil the following night - whatever the day of the week that occurs on.
(the first event in line with other TX cities' calls, and the second event in line with the national call from UFPJ and soon-to-be-announced MoveOn call)

The vigil is being organized by Veterans for Peace (VFP) for the Lamar St. Pedestrian Bridge, 8-9pm: http://www.afsc.org/2000/find_results.php?type=zip&range=10&zipcode=78701&Submit=Find+Events

The day we hit 2000 shows how this war increasingly brings more insecurity to our troops/our nation. Insinuating in any way (even politically-so, by lack of support of the amendment) that our troops torture others makes them even MORE insecure and increases the chance for their being killed in Iraq.
The madness must stop!

3. U.S. Military Death Toll Hits 1,999

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/iraq_casualties
The deaths raised to 1,999 the number of members of the U.S. military who have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

6. Last night's vigils
Just wanted to give a report that last night's vigils in Austin were very solemn. I went to one at the capitol at 6:30 and then the main Veterans for Peace vigil on the Lamar foot bridge. It was hard to tell how many people were there. The local rag says 250 so it was probably 400. There was a memorial wall will all the 2,000 names (by that point there was 2,001) but they didn't have time to put that final soldier's name on the wall. There was a separate wall with the Texas soldiers names, and a table where we made out black arm bands with each of those soldier's names. They're being delivered to KBH and Cornyn's office this morning along with letters. We had a moment of silence and members of the Buddhist community rang bells at the end of that. Very peaceful and very solemn.

May they rest in peace and I hope that we redouble our efforts to stop this senseless war.
