Texans - can you recommend auto insurance companies there?
We need to get coverage in Texas as soon as I move there so I can get my Texas driver's license. Any recommendations you can provide will be much appreciated. Thanks!

1. i have Allstate
the rates are really pretty good. We get a discount for having our cars and homeowners. my daughter gets an academic discount for maintaining a A-B average. Ive only ever made one claim in 4 years for roof damamge and they cut me a check on the spot.

2. Progressive is ok, but make sure they charge you what they
quote you. My partner just insured his motorcycle with them and they sent him a letter saying the quote was wrong and wanted to raise his rates. Allstate is pretty reasonable.

3. I haven't lived there in years
But when I did I used Farmers. However, Progressive is a "BLUE" company and I use them now.

4. we looked into Progressive
but their rates were not anywhere close to what Allstate was offering. I have had two friends get ridiculous quotes from them as well.

5. I use Farmers for cars and house
insurance; I'm satisfied with the rates and they're easy to work with.

6. We use State Farm
When we moved here 21 yrs ago, we went with them, because we bought our house before moving and were in a hurry. The office was near his new office building.

All I can say is after all this time, I couldn't be happier with the AGENT. Besides the insurance company, which has also been a good company, I think having an agent whose good is really important. Ours has been the best.

If you're moving to Houston, PM me and I'll tell you which agent he is.

Mary

We have a smaller company that we've been pretty happy with. He has all the details.

Just be aware that your rates are going to go sky high. Texas and California have the highest auto rates in the nation. My old agent told me this several years ago.

9. I'm not happy with State Farm at all
Remember they're one of the insurance companies refusing to settle their rate rollback issue with the state. I especially hate them on home insurance. They suck. Maybe they just suck in Austin, but I would love to toss them out. With the home insurance issue being so volatile I'm just not sure which way to go.

I got a flier in the mail yesterday and it appears Costco they now will be offering auto and home insurance. I like Costo but the policies are under AMEX insurance company that makes me very wary.

Wonder if John Cobarruvias has any good suggestions.

Sonia

11. State Farm has a REALLY bad reputation.
Edited on Fri May-06-05 10:58 AM by fudge stripe cookays
reprehensor and I saw a special on them a few years ago where they were royally screwing people (nationwide) who'd been in accidents, and not covering their medical...I don't remember all the details, but I promised myself then and there I would NEVER get State Farm.

Almost everyone I've know who has had them has had a royal gripe a few years later.

Because I know you are a good Dem, but Geico is RED, Progressive is BLUE. Check out the Buyblue web site. http://buyblue.org/

15. I know that. I've been a GEICO customer for years.
Progressive doesn't sell homeowner's insurance though. I want to get my car and home insurance through the same company if possible.

12. Progressive (in exactly that sense of the word)
Been with them for 3 years (just renewed, in fact).

They're a very blue corporation. Google them.

Was with Allstate for about 5 years prior. They raise their rates once you've been with them for awhile. Before that, had State Farm for a dozen years, which did the same thing (kept going up on me despite a clean driving record).

S.F., on the other hand, is as red as Satan's ass. They keep threatening to pull out of Texas because they can't get enough profit out of their homeowners' insurance. Geico pulled a bait-and-switch with me as well, when I dropped AS and found P.

You can get quotes from Progressive.com from several companies, including all those mentioned above.

13. We've had Allstate for at least 20 years.
Great agent who has really looked after us and saved us money. Once our kids were off our policy, he even advised us to go with another company for a month so that he could then write us a new policy at a lower rate (strange rules!) We got a policy with Geico and it was a good rate but our rate was lower with Allstate because we also get a discount for having our homeowners insurance with them as well. And we like having an agent.

Welcome to Texas! :hi:

17. I have Progressive
Never had a problem with them, and it doesn't seem too expensive (I'm 24, with a 2001 cavalier, full insurance is a little over $100/month). I hope when I turn 25 it'll go down a bit, but who knows these days.

I've never had an accident with Progressive, so I don't know how they are when that goes down.

My parents use Farmer's for house and car. They like it because they get a discount, and they really like their agent. They've used the same agent since as far as I can remember. I used to be on Farmers (until a couple of accidents and they wanted to go sky high, so I was switched to Progressive on his advice), and he gave me a nice lecture before I went to college on why you should never drink and drive and how a DWI effects your insurance.
