Lawmaker wants further study of radioactive waste (Wed 27 Apr)
Rep. Gallego proposes risk analysis
Odessa American
Rep. Pete Gallego has proposed a resolution to study the risks of importing radioactive waste into Texas.
A public hearing on House Concurrent Resolution 85 is set for 8 a.m. today in Austin before the House Energy Resources Committee, a news release said.

Gallego wants the joint committee to take public testimony and then offer recommendations to the governor and Texas Legislature for action before the next regular session.

“There is no reason West Texas should be the national dumping ground for nuclear waste. It saddens me to think that the natural beauty of West Texas could be destroyed. We need to preserve West Texas for future generations,” Gallego said in a news release. <snip>

Under current law, sources across the United States — including nuclear power plants, nuclear arms production facilities, surface and uranium mines could apply to send radioactive waste mixed with other toxic chemicals for permanent storage in Texas. <snip>
