Question for North Austinites....

Does anyone know of a good locally owned cafe up in North Austin? I end up going to Starbucks because they're everywhere, but I would like to start going somewhere local with hopefully that "weird Austin" feel but all the cool places seem to be in South or Central. :(

I'm located off of 183 in the Northwest Austin area. Any ideas?

1. There is a place on Metric, near my house.

It's in a strip center, and I have to confess I've never been, but it appears to be a coffee place that is not a chain.

My mom goes there a lot on Sundays with her church bunch, and I've gone with them once or twice. The lady that owns it is very nice, and the food and service is good.

13. Aaah the old neighborhood....

That used to be my walk about 13 years ago when I got really hot and lost all my weight. I'd start down in our block of Parkfield (just sought of Kramer), go all the way up Parkfield to the entrance to the trails, then go all the way down Metric to that gas station, where I'd get my Gatorade, then head back.

I used to go to that Episcopal church (St. John's) with my mom back in the 70s. She still goes.

2. North Austin Restaurants

Try Mirabella on Mesa, Chuy's on North Lamar, Trudy's on Burnet, Threadgills on North Lamar, Mangia's on Mesa, Chez Zee on Balcones, Triumph Coffee House (with patio) on Spicewood Springs between Mopac and Mesa, El Mercado on Burnet, The Omelettrey on Burnet, Star of India on West Anderson Lane, Las Colinas on Mesa, Rita's on Rutland, the Little Deli on Woodrow. There is also coffee and bakery goods at Barnes and Noble at the Arboretum and at Borders Books on Research in the Golden Triangle.

Vietnamese food in addition to the coffee and other stuff.

9. I love the Omelettry!

I used to work at the Sound Warehouse across the street.

I'm trying to remember the name of the little bakery down the street aways on the west side of the road before it turns into Medical Parkway. Not Breadwinners, but something like that....

15. The Upper Crust

is I think the name of the bakery--it is on or near the NW corner of Burnet and 45th street. I used to work at TDH on 49th--we went there and to the Omeletry often.

16. By the way

The Little Deli really has great homemade sandwiches. It's open until 7:00 PM. Woodrow is mostly a residential street that runs parallel to Burnet and Lamar, but between them and on a N-S axis, it runs between 49th street and Anderson Lane.

The Little Deli is in the old 1950's shopping center in the middle of the residential neighborhood; the shopping center also contains the last family-owned supermarket in Austin. The Little Deli is on the south end of the shopping center, facing the drugstore. I'm going to all this trouble to point out where it is because it is good but really in an out-of-the-way place that most people don't stumble across during their daily rat race to and from work.

7. Springhill Cafe in Pflugerville.

There's one down in Bee Caves, too. Great home-style cookin' with local flavor and quirkiness.

They have GREAT catfish platters, served up with good hush puppies, too.

They also make a delicious chocolate pie dessert. It's like a mousse, covered in heavy whipped topping. Decadent.

10. Little Mexican place up north....

I think it's at MoPac and Parmer in a shopping center there. I think it's called La Paloma (if it's still there). Really good salsa from what I remember.

It's in the HEB shopping center at MoPac and Parmer, if that's the one that you're thinking of. They have a lunch special called the "choice".

They're quite good. I eat there at least once a month. I have a vendor that loves to go there whenever he takes me out to lunch.

Hey, there's a project manager position opening up here in the distribution center. E-mail me if you want more details. It hasn't been posted yet. The person currently in the role is leaving next week. Don't know if it's something you'd be interested in, but I thought that I'd pass on the info.

I'm guessing the salary range is in the low 30's.

I'm cool for lunch whenever, just let me know a few days in advance so I can schedule it in. I work on Wells Branch Pkwy., so it only takes me a few minutes to get over there.

I'm not sure why I had doves on the brain.

My mom used to live up in Round Rock, so we went in there more frequently. Now she's out in the oh-so-cosmopolitan Manor. What a freaking hole that place is.

She moved out just as it got good--bookstores and coffeehouses and everything.
