New rule puts brakes on spending

The Texas Democratic Party spent $400,000 more than it raised last year and has around $40,000 in the bank, leading party leaders to put a leash on future spending.

"Kind of like living paycheck to paycheck," said Latrice Sellers of Corpus Christi, a member of the finance committee of the State Democratic Executive Committee.

Party Chairman Charles Soechting of San Marcos told party leaders at a meeting Saturday that upcoming events will swell coffers. He's previously said that a fund-raising specialist will help raise $1.5 million this year for the party.

The party holds no statewide office and is in the minority in both chambers of the Legislature. It also has less than one-tenth as much money on hand as the Republican Party of Texas.

1. It would have been helpful if the National Democratic
organization helped out a little. Dean has promised a 50 state campaign. Let us hope he really means it. There are some deeply blue areas here in Jesusland that could use a little help.

3. Not a penny more of my money is going out of state. Also, we
need more and decent fund raisers. Good speakers and events that don't all feature country music and beer. How about something a little more upscale with some decent wine and munchies? I'll drive to these events and will bring along others.

4. Part of the repukes plan is to get rid of Democrats' donors.
They've sent the high paying computer and manufacturing jobs overseas. They are after the trial lawyers. They are after the unions. Now their after the people on social security.

Most Democrats are not as well off as the republicans. We will have to make up the difference with hard work. By defunding the middle class through regressive taxes, unemployment, etc they also defund the party. We can only dig so deep, I guess the party will have to learn to live week to week like the rest of us...
