If you were to move to Houston, what parts of Houston, as a liberal, would you rather live in?

2. Avoid the Katy area
Try close to Rice University or out at Clear Lake Shores (not Clear Lake). Or if you want to be noble, move to Sugarland and be one more Democrat available to get Delay out, out, out.

5. You can find liberals all over the CITY
and the cities within the city, ie Bellaire, West University. I'd definitely take advantage of the diversity and activity of the city and feel secure that there's enough liberal Dems that you'll always have people to hang with.

As political as I am though, to be honest, I'd say figure your commute to work. Chances are if you work anywhere of any size, you'll have to deal with conservatives, cause they commute into work. You can't avoid them, but at the end of the day, they leave the city. YAYE! If I worked in the suburbs, I'd still live in the city and commute out to work. You'd be going against the traffic and your nights and weekends, you'd be in the city.

7. Do consider your commute in this equaton
I live in West U, but I'm self-employed. Wife works in Greenway Plaza.

We live within walking distance of the light rail stop south of the Medical Center, which means we can be at Rice U or Hermann Park in 10 minutes, the Museum District in 15, and downtown (for Rockets or Astros or wining and dining) in 20 -- with the car in the garage.

This is pretty rare in Houston.

Inside the Loop (610) is where the best and most expensive neighborhoods are, as well as the highest concentration of progressives. So pick what you can afford, whether it's an apartment, townhouse or SFD ("single family dwelling"; see, there ARE some zoning laws here).

Forget Sugar Land and the Woodlands and Kingwood and Champions and Katy -- no offense, merci and WHD -- and even Clear Lake, which is my favorite suburb (and not just because of Lisa0825 and johncoby), unless it is close to your work. They're all at least 20 miles from anything you'll want to see and do ... to say nothing of the fact that your neighbors are the ones who keep sending the likes of DeLay back to DC.:puke:

So merci nailed all the high points.

8. No offense, merci?
what's that about? Are you suggesting I live in Katy? LOL, I live just west of Gessner and 10, which (per city council) is projected in 5 yrs to be the geographic center of Houston. BTW, though I have been to Lowe's at Fry Rd years back, before the started building in Houston, I have never been to Katy, TX or actually SugarLand either.

We have a commute like yours. Our offices are across the entry from the bedroom. LOL That's a VERY common thing in this neighborhood.

BTW, I'll be into your neighborhood twice Thursday. We have an appointment at the Med Center mid morning and then late afternoon we'll be back for the Oil Patch Democrats.

10. Don't tell Jim that..................
he starts getting queasy as soon as we get to Holcombe and Main. He swears he can smell the chemo. I'd laugh, but he really does start looking green and perspiring.

As for Greek food, I'm a Greek and cook my own. I won't say the name of the restaurant (you know where) but it's the worse Greek food I've had. If I'm going to buy it, I like Niko Niko's. Actually, if I'm not cooking, I like Dimassi's and all the Greek, Turkish and Middle Eastern food in my own neighborhood.

12. LOL
I knew you were Greek but I thought "that place" had pretty good food.

It's where they hosted Dennis Kucinich when he came to town; it can't be all that bad, can it?

14. They should have called me
I'd have cooked for Dennis. He just looks like the kind of guy you want to cook for and then pack a basket for him to take along.

I'm having a wonderfully interesting lunch Wednesday. I can hardly wait to tell you the details.

If I had to live anywhere but Austin, I would just shoot myself. Please don't take that as honest advice, though.

13. This is true; and nearly everyone of a certain (young) age
who moves to Houston wants to live in the Galleria area. All the great restaurants and clubs are there...

When I moved to Houston the first time -- in 1983 -- I rented an apartment on Richmond near Gessner. I was 25 years old and single. "Young, dumb, and full of cum", as they used to say.

18. I love my neighborhood
I live in the Montrose area, or maybe in the southwest corner of it. Visit the Menil museum (it's free) and wander around a bit from there, and you'll see why I like it so much. Then PM me so I can fix you dinner and take you to the Chocolate Bar on West Alabama for dessert. :hi: You are a gem: if you do half as much Republican-baiting IRL as you do on this board, it would be a hoot to have you in Houston! We'll have to venture a bit outside Montrose to find most of those Republicans though...
