Morrison meets with Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman
Emanuel meets with DeLay challenger

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) yesterday vetted a potential challenger to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), meeting with Richard Morrison, who challenged DeLay last year and held him to 55 percent of the vote.

But Emanuel, who chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), declined to offer Morrison an early endorsement, instead giving the potential candidate a proposal for how the DCCC wants the race to unfold.

The DCCC wants to avoid a bruising Democratic primary in the Houston-area 22nd District.

“They made a proposal and we’re weighing it,” said Nathan Wilcox, Morrison’s spokesman.

1. We have a potential problem in Rahm Emmanuel
He's a DLCer through and through. They have not exactly been successful in choosing or running Dem candidates on their wishy-washy Republican-lite platforms. Morrison is a Dean's Dozen candidate who proved he has what it takes running extremely well against DeLay last year. If the DSCC stands in the way of our strongest candidates, then Emmanuel will turn out to be a problem for Dean and the party base.

2. Morrison's spokesman sounds very confident
“They’re very interested,” Wilcox added. “He’s the nominee. He can beat anyone in the primary.”

3. I think the fact that Emanuel met with them and didn't
delegate the meeting to someone else is significant. The DCCC can't endorse him officially until they hear from other candidates, and no one has declared yet.
