Quan studies his odds in a DeLay challenge
By KRISTEN MACK
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

Democrats are wooing term-limited Houston City Councilman Gordon Quan as a possible 2006 challenger to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

Quan recently met with Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee officials in Washington and admits he finds the idea intriguing. But he also has family and business considerations.

"I'm trying to decide whether it's an ego trip or a real calling," he said.

Quan, who says he already was eyeing a congressional seat, now lives in the west Houston district represented by Republican John Culberson.

1. I've been wondering, ... how much would it cost for a whole
bunch of us just going down to ole Delay's district and moving in for the minimum period it takes to become a registered voter in his district and vote this -*-*-*- out of office. Kinda like stackin the deck, but not.....? Really, how much could a studio apt. cost for 6 months to establish residence? It's time to get radical folks or things will only get worse.

2. Delay won last time by over 38,000 votes last year
I'm not sure if there is enough vacant housing in his district.

4. Stay behind Morrison
He's got the name recognition now. He came on strong last time . . . proving that it is possible to defeat slimeball.
He did the hard work when others wouldn't.

And he CAN win.

5. Is it still true about residency in Texas, you only had to pl;edge
intent to move there. We could do that and vote in Texas next year if so.

14. Like Poppy had a hotel room reserved in Houston as an address,
but he lived in Maine & Washington, so he could run for President as a Texan. There was a (I think) Doonsbury cartoon in the Sunday papers that had the application and instructions to register intent to move to Texas and thus register to vote.

8. I agree...
Culberson sucks bigtime and a lot of people don't like him much. I just got an email from him announcing townhall meetings. I have been writing this doorknob for I don't know how long and this is the first that I have heard from him. He doesn't care about us here. I think Quan could take him. He is genuine and shows real concern.

9. Are you going to either of the townhall meetings?
I have a lot of catching up to do this weekend, but I might try to make the one in the afternoon.

Morrison is the right guy for dist 22. I am in Culberson's district and would wholly support Quan vs. Culberson. IMO if DeLay goes down, we should be trying our best to take his clones with him, not just conceding districts like ours.

15. Quan is much more .......
to my liberal leanings than Morrison. Quan is a terrific guy and as a resident of the 7th, I would love to see Quan take on Culberson.

I think Morrison (whose political stance is a little too SugarLand for me) and Quan, would be a good tag-team, taking on Delay in the 22nd and Culberson in the 7th.

The 7th could be winnable!! I've been in Houston for 21 years and we have ALWAYS had a Democratic mayor (infact Democrats challenging Democrats in the "non-partisan" race). Quan has been an at large councilman for several years and he manages to pull plenty of Repukes support. OK, it's non-partisan and probably the Repukes assume he's Repuke. It's easier than reading his stance. Quan can get the money and he has a ton of respect around here. And on the selfish side, I would LOVE to have him as my congressperson! This is the congressional district that put Poppy Bush on the map. We can bring it home!

I noticed the article mentioned Rick Noriega. It would be a dream if he moved just a short jaunt into Al Green's congressional district and took him on in the primary. For those who don't know, Al Green answered Tom Delay's call and took on Chris Bell in the primary, since even Delay had to admit, the district would go to the Democrat. Nice guy, huh? Sure that district is heavily minority, but the fact is, it's about an even split Black and Hispanic. Rick would be a perfect person to take that primary and walk in in the general, cause even the Repukes would be hardpressed to vote against Major Noriega, just home from Afghanistan!

16. Fellow Resident of the 7th, here
And I am with you on this one: Quan would be a TERRIFIC candidate for the 7th. Wouldn't that be great? In fact, the idea got into my shoe enough that I just sent his campaign an email about it. My email said, in effect: "If Mr. Quan runs for the 7th, I'll phone bank, I'll block walk, I'll host a house party! But please leave the 22nd to Mr. Morrison. And my DU buddies agree with me on this!"

Okay I didn't specifically mention DU, but I did say that today I'd "heard" from other Dems in the 7th who shared this view - hope y'all don't mind! ;)

Look, my thought is that if Tom DeLay falls hard enough, he should take a couple of his stooges down with him. It shouldn't be too hard to link Culberson to DeLay - what percentage of their House votes do you think were identical? If it's 100%, wouldn't that be a peach? We could tell voters:

Your Choices are:
Door #1, a guy who has "served" you as puppet of the most corrupt guy in Congress!
Door #2, a guy who thinks for himself, well-known and -respected for his service to the City of Houston!

the envelope, please....

17. Feel free to quote me, whatever..........
when you're in contact with Quan. Just don't mention me by name. Quan knows me, at least recognizes me and chats, but I'm not sure he knows my name. Anyway, my husband and I worked for John Martinez for Congress in the 7th last time, had a fundraiser and have known his wife since our old Dukakis days. Until I know he's not going to make another run, I'm going to lay low. If the two of them should end up in a primary race (unlikely), I want to plead "busy". lol

I'd really hate to see Quan go into the 22nd against Delay. The numbers from last time show Morrison's weakness was in Ft.Bend. Maybe because of the Asian population there the party thinks Quan could pull that.

My experience lately, has been the Asian population (which numbers seem to lump together Middle Easterners, Indian, Pakistani, Thai, etc) are moving to the Democrats anyway. Our senate district has a lot of Asians now holding precinct committee spots and even challenging each other for the spots. I think a good Asian representation among Democratic candidates will be looked on favorably, whether it's in the voter's home district or not.

Whatever Asian vote Quan could pull (that Morrison wouldn't already be able to) will be off-set by Quan's liberal record (and it's not just talk, it's a matter of record). The fact is Morrison's more conservative leanings on some issues are more Ft.Bend friendly and Morrison can fudge a bit, because he has no record.
