Tennessee lottery players could learn in a few weeks whether they'll get the chance to play the Mega Millions game, a counterpart to the popular Powerball game played here now.

A new deal between the 12 states that play Mega Millions and the 33 jurisdictions that sell Powerball tickets would allow the states to cross-sell tickets to the other game so players could buy whatever ticket they wanted in their home state.

The Tennessee Lottery Board meets on Nov. 2 to vote, and Mega Millions' tickets could go on sale here as early as 2010. Tennessee stores would continue selling Powerball tickets separately, too.

...

Border states that sell Mega Millions tickets are Georgia and Virginia. All the other states with lotteries that border Tennessee sell Powerball.

Powerball drawings are held Wednesdays and Saturdays. Mega Millions' jackpots are up for grabs on Tuesdays and Fridays.

...

Selling tickets for both games in one state had been prohibited before a deal was struck last week. Details of the agreement still must be finalized, according to lottery officials. Discussions also are under way about creating a national lottery, separate from Powerball and Mega Millions.
