Daschle to view Kerry nomination in South Dakota

The nation's top elected Democrat plans to leave Boston before presumptive presidential nominee John Kerry addresses the party's convention.

Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle will attend other events at Boston's Fleet Center beginning July 26, but will return early to South Dakota to make appearances in his own re-election campaign. He said he plans to host an event that will allow people to watch the convention together.

"I thought it would be fun to watch John Kerry speak from South Dakota with South Dakotans," Daschle told the Associated Press on Thursday.

Others question the timing, saying Daschle is trying to distance himself from the left-of-center policies touted by Kerry and running mate Sen. John Edwards. A story in Thursday's Capitol Hill newspaper, Roll Call, reported that Daschle will leave Boston late July 28, after giving his own speech earlier in the week. Kerry is set to speak July 29.

We need a new leader...we can't have one who is constantly looking over his shoulder and not able to be a spokesman for Democratic priorities!!!

for what it's worth

Suppose there's a "terrorist" attack on the Democratic convention.
It would be wise to have a few senior Dems out of town just in case, to maintain some kind of party leadership.

4. He is the only senior Dems so far
that we know of who will be out of town during any part of the convention. He is still going to be there for part of it.
