GOP Captures Senate Seats in Ga., S.C.

By DAVID ESPO
AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans captured Democratic seats in Georgia and South Carolina Tuesday night and reached out for renewed control of the Senate. Democratic Leader Tom Daschle faced a strong challenge in South Dakota.

GOP Sen. Jim Bunning struggled to re-election in Kentucky, and former Republican Rep. Tom Coburn prevailed easily in Oklahoma - a race with no incumbent on the ballot where Democrats had long touted their chances.

DeMint was seen as the favorite, but Tenenbaum closed the gap after weeks of attacks over his proposal to scrap the Internal Revenue Service and replace it with a national sales tax.

DeMint also made headlines by saying openly gay teachers should not be allowed in public schools, then following that up a few days later by saying unwed mothers were unfit to stand in front of a classroom. He eventually apologized for the latter remark.
