Sanford has lost the GOP

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - As the majority of South Carolina's state Senate Republicans call on Gov. Mark Sanford to leave office, the governor's spokesman says Sanford is now keeping silent.

It's a change from Tuesday, when Gov. Sanford told the Associated Press his Argentine mistress, 41-year-old Maria Belen Chapur, was his 'soul mate,' but that he would try to fall back in love with his wife. He also admitted more liasons with Chapur than he had previously told the public about.
It may not be easy to win back some in the state, and there is a growing call to deny the governor the chance to try.

The growing chorus of lawmakers who've publicly announced or told The Associated Press they want the philandering governor gone reached 14 Wednesday. There are 27 Republicans in the Senate - a 46-member chamber the party controls.

Most feel it is only a matter of time, but his wife was his main political advisor and of course she is not available. There may be no one that can fill the "Goldwater" role and say, "Governor, it's time to go."
