Boy suspended for using broken pencil sharpener
Source: South Carolina's The State.com

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- A 10-year-old boy here has been suspended from school for having something most students carry in their supply boxes: a pencil sharpener.

The problem was his sharpener had broken, but he decided to use it anyway.

A teacher at Hilton Head Island International Baccalaureate Elementary School noticed the boy had what appeared to be a small razor blade during class on Tuesday, according to a Beaufort County sheriff's report.

It was obvious that the blade was the metal insert commonly found in a child's small, plastic pencil sharpener, the deputy noted.

The boy -- a fourth-grader described as a well-behaved and good student -- cried during the meeting with his mom, the deputy and the school's assistant principal.

And what lesson do you think he learned? Way to traumatize a kid who did nothing wrong...fools. Zero tolerance rules are designed so administrators don't need to spend time thinking.

Sorry, but sometimes the obvious needs to be said. The sharpener could have simply been confiscated and nothing more needed to be done.

12. Good job -- we'll dumb down students even more!
Kill their ingenuity for seeking out necessary tools.
Reward cynicism.
Show the students "you're in charge" because you can.

And we wonder why we're behind the world.

They can shove their suspension.

17. He should have been commended for a creative solution to his problem.
Instead...

Jeez - when I was in 4th grade I used the small blade on my cub scout knife to sharpen my pencils. In class. I remember a kid was stabbed in my class - either 3rd or 4th grade. With a sharp PENCIL.

I'd raise holy hell. I'd put giant billboards up, and coat the town in fliers that clearly illustrated the stupidity of this until the offending party was either fired or put on leave and a public apology has been received.

Ignorant bureaucrats need a good beat down now and again to illustrate to them the errors of their ways.

23. How sick is this? I went through this kind of stuff when my son was a teen-ager.
If "they" get your kids name, "they" will hound you until you sell your home(at a loss) and move. I didn`t have the money for a good lawyer. The "good" lawyer that I contacted told me he could get every charge wiped away, no problem, exept I could not afford his price. Believe me "they" can destroy your child`s life with allegations. I have been there, I have lived through it, and my child has managed to get past all of the bogus allegations. If you cannot afford an expensive lawyer, you ,and your child are screwed. My son will accept his degree in electical engineering from a southern state university in May. He faught every inch of the way. He is my heart, my love and my hero. He has never missed the dean`s list. His fight has been real. He had to leave our state. Still seems so sad to me that had I had the money to fight the bastards he wouldn`t have to have leave this state.

The last sentence of the article, where the spokesman for the school says "we're going to be reasonable".

I'd say they passed reasonable when they went past throwing the broken sharpener in the trash. Now they are in let-me-slam-your-face-into-the-wall-until-you-come-to-your-senses territory.
