When did Americans become afraid?
I had a conversation earlier today with a fellow union member (different unions). He mentioned that he was going to Greece for vacation, a country according to him where they strike and shut the entire country down. This statement led me to ponder when did Americans become afraid of protesting in numbers? When did they become afraid to stand up for their rights? When did they become afraid to speak out loudly about issues?

I know that many of us aren't afraid. However, I think the majority of Americans are. This is a country of people who fought for unionization and workers rights since the 1800's. This is a country of people who fought in 2 world wars and brought about their end. What has happened?

2. The fear has come in the last 40 years, since I was a wild-eyed teenager who naively
believed that our protests were actually important to ending the Vietnam War.

The why is even simpler...

1) treatment of those who do protest - violent putdowns (Kent, Jackson, every anti-war rally, every anti-economic system protest, etc.)

2) failure to achieve anything through these kind of actions

The media very successfully communicated this lesson. And Idiot America learned it. Mission Accomplished.
