WASHINGTON (AP) — A national abortion rights group whose Pennsylvania chapter backed Sen. Arlen Specter's re-election six years ago on Tuesday called the Republican "emphatically not pro-choice" and said it is supporting his Democratic challenger.
Elizabeth Cavendish, interim president of NARAL Pro-choice America, said Specter's votes to confirm conservative judicial nominees and to fund abstinence programs nullify his claim that he supports abortion rights.
"It is critical that everyone here today, and everyone listening, understands that Arlen Specter is emphatically not pro-choice," Cavendish said at a Philadelphia event announcing the group's endorsement of Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Hoeffel. "His record belies any claim that he is pro-choice."
The Pennsylvania chapter of NARAL endorsed Specter during his 1998 GOP primary election, and lauded his "commitment to reproductive freedom."
