State police have charged the teen-age son of state Sen. Robert Regola III with the misdemeanor crime of being in possession of his father's gun, which was used in the suicide of his next-door neighbor and friend, 14-year-old Louis A.J. Farrell.

"It's a sad day for the criminal justice system," said Duke George, attorney for Robert "Bobby" Regola IV, 17, shortly after he received the criminal complaint in which his client is charged as a juvenile with possession of a firearm by a minor.

Yesterday, Mr. George filled in for the elder Regola's attorney when the senator was arraigned on three counts of perjury and single counts of allowing his son to possess a firearm, false swearing and reckless endangerment in connection with Louis' death. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Thursday.

Louis' body was found by his father the morning of July 22 in the woods behind the family home. Next to him was Mr. Regola's Taurus pistol. He died of a single-gunshot to the head.
