Video rental store in Beaverton/Tigard area
I'm looking for a non-Blockbuster, non-Hollywood, video store where I can rent DVDs for a reasonable price.

Anybody have any suggestions?

If there aren't any in the southwest metro area, are there any in downtown Portland?

I've been looking, and I can't seem to find anything.

Thanks.

1. I live Downtown - there is a place called "Watch This"....
on W. Burnside just down (east) and accross from Powell's. The owner is really cool, he orders stuff special for me and does both rentals and sales. Lots of good indie and foreign stuff too.

3. Thanks for the suggestion
I will give Watch This a try. It sounds like it is just what I'm looking for.

8. I finally made it there
And I rented two movies.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation. I really like how they have the store set up. They seem to go to whatever lengths (that are legal) to get movies into their store -- they carry some that haven't been released on DVD in the US yet.

2. I can't recall a single one
they all seem to have disappeared. :(

I use Netflix, frankly. $17 bucks a month and I get more movies than I have time to watch.

4. About Netflix
I have used Netflix in the past, and I have enjoyed their service. But once I found myself living in the Portland area, I have found it much better to use the two fantastic library systems that exist here. As a resident of Washington county, I am a member of both the Washington county and Multnomah county systems, and I am able to find most of the movies I am looking for. Sometimes the hold list is a bit daunting, but both libraries order lots of copies of their movies, and it doesn't take as long as you might think.

I need a video store for the times I want to watch something today, or to fill in some of the gaps in the libraries' collections. Netflix doesn't fill that need for me. Many of the movies I want to see right away are not the most popular ones, and Netflix doesn't always order that many copies of their more offbeat films. I sometimes found myself waiting months to get them from Netflix. For me, waiting months for a time-based pay service was unacceptable.

If you haven't used the libraries for DVDs, you might be interested in trying them. It takes a little getting used to finding what you want, but once you get the searches down, it really is pretty nice.

6. I agree, Movie Madness is a must see, however...
when I went in there and asked about DVD sales, the clerk was very indignant about the fact that they do almost no sales. I'm one of those people that if I like a movie, I want to own it. What can I say, I'm that kind of film buff. So that really ticked me off.
