1. Any word on what the petitioning is for
Not that I could carry your petition yet, but I'll be an Oregon resident come May 1st. Some people might want to know what the petition is about.

2. lol, oops
It's a follow-up on the one I posted the other day, they're going to have petitioners all over the state, gathering signatures to give to the Republican senator against "the nuclear option" on the filibuster.

I'm working to get a copy of the petition and post it, so everybody can do this across the country. It's a step beyond phone calls and emails, and helps to make more people aware of what's going on with the judiciary and filibuster too. So, stay tuned!

Where are you going to be moving to in Oregon?

9. No... about ten miles away as the crow flies
Most of the fire was in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area. Grants pass is pretty cool as far as towns go. Don't like towns much myself though. I'm currently living at 9,500 ft. in Colorado, so it'll be quite a change. Not much population out here. Republiclone nary a one for miles and miles.

How was it going? I got about 50 signatures in Florence today.

Here's an online petition, for those who didn't find anyplace to sign. I just got it in my email.

10. Gota work multiple clip boards
I hold the all time (unofficial) record for most sigs in one day 716, on a Prop 1 petition. That was a non-binding petition also. Those are the easiest. Official petitions I slow down allot even running multiples. I think I got a little over 200 in a day once.

12. Teach us more
This wasn't a petition in that sense. It was just getting signatures to let Smith know people care about the filibuster.

I did it for two reasons. One, the one you said below, just getting around the media and getting the word out. The other, rural and city don't work together enough. There's no excuse for that with email. Oddly enough, I get resistance on both sides. But not from the Alliance for Justice this time, which was terrific. And, I thought it would be good for the group to be able to write a letter and say people from Portland, Salem, Medford, Bend, Eugene AND a few small towns too, for a change.

Multiple clipboards hmm. How would that work?

Oh, and Grants Pass, pretty right wing. That's where I first learned about Birchers, way back in the 70's. Out Cave Junction way, there are some pockets of lefties, as I recall, active environmentalists. Mixed bag, like Colorado I imagine.

13. Multiple clip boards
Just means that instead of one petition, you carry a whole slew of boards. I can handle 6-8 in the good situation. Like 4th of July events, thousands of people loafing around out there with nothing to do but wait for the fire works. If you got one petition and you walk up to four people you have to wait for four people to sign. If you gave each a petition it takes the same amount of time as one signature. You increase your effectiveness by factors of 5 or better.

Events that have 10-20K get a permit for tabling. Takes only ten minutes or so to get the permit. A stationary table allows for a banner and highly visible sloganeering that will let everyone know instantly who you are and what you are up to. Tabling gives a little bit more validity. Get a few people to help at the table. Expand the tabling area with your other petitioners working the crowds approaching from either direction out say 100-200 feet from the tabling activity. Tabling by itself (without helpers octopusing out but within view of the table and slogans) is only a little bit better than single standalone petitioner. It's the team work and the ability with that team to work a region of the crowd. This method encompasses a much larger sampling of the crowd and ultimately produces more signatures and a stronger effort.

In the situation you described, were you are attempting to engage the public in a dialog, I'd utilize local TV and especially radio stations to give Public Service Announcements with dates and time were the petition can be signed, targeting events. I've also found that setting specific places on a certain day of the week say Fridays 2-4:00 at the crossroads mall and 7-9:00 and the park, in those announcements will tweak the listeners with a particular ax to grind or issue that gets their goat will produce a few motivated individuals that will write down or remember the times so they can get there. These folks that will "seek you out" are potential petitioners themselves, (even if they don't know it yet) further increasing your effectiveness.

Remember that almost everybody wants to hear about what they could do, and almost anybody will sign a petition for anything. But the person that will carry the petition is a rare bird indeed. Kiss that guys butt and let her know their work is important and that you personally appreciate it. In the end, how many you get to carry the petition will determine to a great degree the success or failure of your work.

You'd be surprised, a month or so of petitioning in a high profile manor will create an agenda on an issue where it seemingly didn't exist before you began. Everyone in your area will know something is being done and give the public hope for the change they desire. Public morale is important.

14. I'm fried now but
check back here tomorrow. I'll post the good news. I'm happy to report that the revolution has begun.

Basically I'm a walking, talking, breathing, living, revolution itching for the ultimate fight. Mr. Bush is going to wish he never heard of Mr. Rove when I get done with him.

11. I would urge all activists
To carry petitions. Especially local issues, or state wide.

You wish to get out there and talk to the public about issues, carry a petition. For those that haven't done it you'll find folks are genuinely interested in doing something and genuinely interested in an opportunity to be part of a change. They'll talk about signing the petition for weeks. They tell their friends they signed the petition. One can see real pride in signing. Set high, but attainable, goals and challenge your circulators and they'll feel like they are excelling in there work.

15. I didn't know about this
I just posted an urgent request for calls to Smith. I'm glad to see there is so much energy in Oregon around this issue.

Snith is a pretty conservative senator, but he has his moments of decency. I am hopeful he will see reason on the nukuler option.
