Just heard on Stephanie Miller about a new liberal radio station near Cleveland
I'm from California and was listening to the Stephanie Miller show this morning. She announced that her show had a new affiliate, WABQ in Cleveland, Ohio. Clevescene.com reported: "Frustrated liberal listener, Gary Richards...is set to launch WABQ-AM 1460, a progressive talk station due to ramp up next Monday, August 1. 'You can move across your AM dial and hear Rush Limbaugh on 10 different stations,' says Richards. 'It’s as if the conservatives have a corner on the market. But it seems there’s a large unserved or underserved progressive niche here. There’s nobody to tell their side of the story, and that’s what we’re here for.'" However, WABQ's daytime signal is strongest in the eastern suburbs and weakens in downtown Cleveland. The transmitter is in Mentor, a city in a Republican district OH-14 (of Steven LaTourette) and reaches mostly OH-11 (of Marcia Fudge, D). It's great that the progressive message has another media outlet in the nation, but it's disappointing that people living in Dennis Kucinich's or Betty Sutton's districts will have to listen to static with the talk.

1. WABQ was at one time owned by my cousin in law...
When he owned it, the tower was on the east side of Cleveland and they broadcast out of an old church building.

It was an African American bible thumping, resurrecting, damnation and salvation kind of a station...

2. There used to be multiple progressive stations in the state
All were owned by ClearChannel. Akron had one as did Columbus. All were high on the AM dial and poorly promoted. However, listeners in Akron were growing just by word of mouth. Then came the elections in 2006, and the Democrats swept into power in Columbus. In February, all the progressive stations were suddenly shut down ... poor ratings ... in Akron, the station became "sports talk" because that is SO hard to find in the area.

I listen regularly to Stephanie Miller by streaming the Mic, 92.1, out of Madison, Wisconsin. It's not as good as having a station here in NE Ohio, but I get to hear the show. That being said, that's great that she will be heard on Cleveland's east side.
