Mecklenborg 'stripper' mess proves intoxicating to Dems, sobering to GOP

The new news that happened in April but surfaced this week, that Democrats and profressives will find too intoxicating to resist, that puts Ohio GOP House Speaker William Batchelder in a political and moral bind, is that one of the speaker's committee lieutenants, who chairs the State Government and Elections Committee, was arrested by Indiana police in the wee hours of the morning with Viagra and a lot of alcohol in his blood, and a woman, some think might be a stripper who was half his age and he wasn't related to, in his car, which may have been sporting questionable Kentucky license plates.

The news of GOP Rep. Robert Mecklenborg's arrest hit Internet newsstands when Brian Hester, executive editor at Plunderbund, a progressive Democratic blog site that reports on Ohio politics, reported on public arrest records that identified Mecklenborg as the person who Hoosier police pulled over near the Burger King at the corner of Lorey Lane and US 50 in Lawrenceburg.

Included in the Dearborn County police arrest records was the name of a woman named Tiona Roberts, who some speculate may have been a stripper and was in the car when Mecklenborg, driving drunk, was taken into custody by local police. Mecklenborg, now in his third term, has been an outspoken advocate for abortion banning bills and is the sponsor of a controversial, some say illegal bill on voting, that mandates Ohio voters present an acceptable photo ID before voting.

Mecklenborg has a wife and three children. Mecklenborg is an attorney at Dinsmore & Shohl law firm and a former county prosecutor. He is a member of the Ohio and Cincinnati Bar Associations.

4. When Mecklenborg renewed his license, he lied about "not having the citation"
He lied on a legal document. He could be disbarred.

Cleveland Public Radio WCPN 90.3

Cincinnati-area Republican State Representative Robert Mecklenborg says he’ll resign on August 2nd. Mecklenborg was recently arrested for driving under the influence in Indiana while having a female passenger, who was not his wife, in the car he was operating. In his resignation, Mecklenborg said his recent actions have become a distraction to the important work that lies ahead for members of the legislature.

Republican House Speaker Bill Batchelder says while Mecklenborg has served an important role in the legislature in the past, he has made the appropriate decision to step aside. Mecklenborg will face charges in court later this month. Democratic Party Chair Chris Redfern says it’s possible Mecklenborg could find himself fighting to keep his law license, too.

REDFERN: “His driver’s license was not valid when he was pulled over. Four days after the late night charge of drunk driving, he went to a local bmv office and got his driver’s license renewed and checked the box that there were no citations or charges pending anywhere else. That was simply not true. Lawyers have an obligation beyond a lay person because those lawyers are officers of the court and any time a lawyer attests to something that lacks truthfulness, they are then judged by the disciplinary council of the Ohio Supreme Court.”

There is no word yet on whether the Ohio Supreme Court’s disciplinary council will look into the matter.
