Youngstown. A hotbed of HRC support.
Unions?

I keep an eye on Youngstown, my hometown, no matter where I live, and the Mahoning Valley is a serious center of Hillary support. The political talk on the Vindicator newspaper website is massively pro-HRC, and very anti-Obama. With a vengence!!! Horrid posts, including a weekly repeat of the Barack is a muslim, and variants including Omaba is an A-Rab!!! Horrible crap.

On a better note: Youngstown might be getting a change of ownership at one of the AM stations, and the new owners will bring Stephanie Miller, Ed Shultz, Thom Hartmann, Mike Malloy and Rachel Maddow to the Valley. More to come...

Of course our newspaper is Republican Owned and I'm sure the Plain Dealer is as well.

Did you ever listen to WANR from Warren during the 2004 campaign? The local afternoon 'liberal' show?

Also, here's a link to the Vindy forums:

Talk of the Valley and Politics get the bad traffic.

4. It's difficult for me to believe
that race doesn't play a big part in that support.

I'm originally from Youngstown and have family and friends there. You wouldn't believe some of the racist comments I've heard from those folks.

5. Agreed!
There is a pretty clear racial divide between HRC and Obama supporters in the Mahoning Valley.

They seem to live behind The Kolbasi Curtain! The vitriol I've seen from the Valley is the worst kind of hate imaginable.

7. When I moved to Cleveland from the Mahoning Valley, it was a step out of pessimism
I noticed that racist jokes were fading away by the 1980s. I had attributed it to time and the maturing of Ohioans, but it could have been that I moved to a more enlightened part of Ohio. At work and in most associations that I have, no one tells "those kind" of jokes.

10. Hot Damn! I went to YSU, too.
Although at that time it was called Youngstown COLLEGE. I would have graduated in 1964 but I fell in love instead and got married.

Graduated from Chaney High School. You?

11. I'm from Youngstown too. :)
My parents still live there. We're all HRC supporters, but racism has nothing to do with it.

12. Welcome to DU
I'm sure most HRC supporters are NOT racist, but the tone of the conversation on the Vindy message board contain some of vile things, way beyond the 'he's a muslim' email meme...
