Justice Resnick’s departure will leave Justice Paul Pfeifer, a Bucyrus Republican, as the sole remaining member of what was, as recently as 2002, a 4-3 majority. That majority repeatedly angered Republican-controlled government and the business community on such issues as school funding, workers’ compensation, insurance contracts, and lawsuit reform.
“Alice Resnick has been the conscience of Ohio for going on 20 years now,” said Warren-based appellate Judge William O’Neill. “I was genuinely hoping to sit with her (on the court), and I still hold out that hope. I won’t believe she’s not running until she tells me that herself.”
Just the second woman elected to the state’s high court, Justice Resnick was targeted for defeat in 2000 in a massive campaign that was subsequently determined by the Ohio Elections Commission to have been illegally financed with corporate cash.
She still garnered a robust 57 percent of the vote, prompting speculation that she could challenge Gov. Bob Taft in 2002 or Chief Justice Thomas Moyer in 2004. She opted for neither...
