Ohio UAW does a heckuva job
Surprise endorsement...

DAVID HAMMER

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -

...unaffiliated labor union endorsed Hackett...against

recognized labor champion Rep. Sherrod Brown...

...the Cleveland AFL-CIO voted to continue its long-standing practice of backing Brown...

Brown...expects to receive the state AFL-CIO endorsement at its convention next month. The Ohio AFL-CIO has 750,000 ...(Ohio)UAW has 175,000...

"It's generally understood that there's been some ill will between Brown and Mahaffey and everyone's uncertain the exact reason why," he said.(?)

Joe White, a professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, says Brown has a spotless record fighting for union causes over his six terms in Congress. Most recently, Brown was the most vocal opponent of President Bush's Central American Free Trade Agreement and came two votes shy of defeating it.

Ohio UAW supports Hackett over Brown in U.S. Senate race
Saturday, December 17, 2005
Stephen Koff
Plain Dealer Bureau Chief
Washington-

"Sherrod Brown has been 100 percent on all union issues, he is always there with us," said Cincinnati AFL-CIO chief Dan Radford, calling himself stunned by the UAW's action....

Brown said on Friday that the auto workers across the state will support him at the polls, regardless of their union's endorsement.

"I predict with absolute certainty that I will get the overwhelming majority of UAW members' votes, both in May and in November, and I will continue to fight for working families, and union members and non-union members, as a U.S. senator."...

Ohio UAW About To Endorse Hackett
Rumor has it that the Ohio UAW is about to endorse Paul Hackett for US Senate. You could look at this one of two ways. Either this starts Paul Hackett cooking with gas, or it's a kiss of death. I'm goin' with kiss of death.

The kiss of death argument rests mainly on the track record of organized labor in statewide Democratic primary races. The most notorious disaster was in 1994, when practically the entire labor movement got behind Joel Hyatt for US Senate, and Rob Burch for Governor, a major factor which yielded the most humiliating collapse in Ohio Democratic Party history that fall.

How would a UAW endorsment play for Hackett? The Ohio UAW has been pretty dysfunctional lately. It's former Cleveland area director, Warren Davis, pulled one of the most ridiculous, bizarre stunts of all time when he said he would retire, changed his mind, and ran briefly for Congress in 2002. The current Ohio UAW region director, Llyod Mahaffee, hasn't been a real big fan of Sherrod Brown. Who knows where this leads. One thing is for sure...Hackett will make a big stink about it.

1. Ohio UAW look like idiots
sounds like they need to get rid of Warren Davis. (Dis)organized labor in Ohio is desperately in need of retooling - they've been a major factor in enabling Repubs to control the state during the last decade. Its hard to tell if they are putting R's in power deliberately or out of stupidity.

This endorsement makes no sense and certainly will not win them any points with candidates who learn that advancing the labor agenda in Ohio will only earn you a knife in the back.

2. I'm going with this as a a winning
endorsement. Paul Hackett has worked side-by-side with Wes Well and other Union Leaders addressing the auto workers crisis. Paul has earned their alliance. It is a good thing.

3. Hackett has no record...who knows how he would vote on
labor issues IF elected...I am not willing to take that gamble...He's a Libertarian...not a Dem.

Something is going on here...Is the UAW that stupid??? I don't think Hackett knows squatt about Auto Workers and the mess they are in...but I do know that Hackett can't help GM manufacture marketable cars......and probably neither could Sherrod Brown...but Brown has a long history of dealing with Labor Issues and has always stood strong for them. I don't think Hackett would fight like Sherrod did....Sherrod fought against CAFTA and NAFTA like a mother for her cub. Hackett has NO record on this.....NONE.

Hackett likes Hackett and he wants to go play in DC...and I get the feeling his first priority is NOT the people of Ohio, but his ego.

He didn't ask for a Recount after the mess in Clermont County...instead went on vacation....he was pleased with his good showing and thought he had bigger fish to fry.....IN THE SENATE. Why bother with the 2nd District? I have received national coverage with this Special Election...I can be a SENATOR.

I saw this man....twice....he is so full of himself I thought he would explode. And his only public service is the City Council of Milford, Ohio.....only 2 years and in the early '90's. And 'kicking in doors while carrying 80 pounds on my back in Fallujah'....a quote from Hackett.....how does that qualify you for the job of Senator?

I am ill about my home state of Ohio...I don't see Hackett working to support the people of Ohio...he just likes to draw attention to himself by calling w. names....Shit, I call w. names everyday. I want a Senator who wants to stop this war, lower our trade deficit, cut military spending (why we are so in debt), and talk about social justice....why are Food Stamps being eliminated for so many? I just don't see this man as one who cares about other people. He only cares about the power he can acquire.

I don't trust him. He is too full of himself.

5. Hackett has tremendous experience
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 11:33 AM by liberalnurse
as a military Officer and Veteran of the Iraq War...He is a proven attorney as well. To function in the U.S Senate, one needs not have a hierarchy advancement tier from dog catcher to the Senate. A Senator is the representation of their district/state constituents. He has homed his skills by being one of the people he plans to represent. A Senator is an individual who is an advocate within a body of advocates. I want Hackett to be my advocate in Congress.

6. then vote for him....
Did you examine Sherrod Brown's record at all....? Have you listened to or read any of his speeches?

What does 'he has homed (sic) his skills by being one of the people he plans to represent' mean? He practiced being a person? You gotta give me accomplishments...what cases did he work on as a 'proven attorney' that would give me an indication of his priorities and values.

When I heard him speak, I came away thinking he was a devout Libertarian....not a Democrat. But maybe that is what appeals to you.

I know what a senator is...I just don't see how 'carrying 80 pounds on my back and knocking down doors in Fallujah' (Hackett's words) qualifies him to be more than...oh, I don't know.... a furniture mover?

I hope you would vote for Brown if he won the primary...as I would for Hackett. Of course with Blackwell counting the votes, we will never really know who won, will we? Pretty much leaves DeWine as the winner....unless we can get rid of these damn Diebold machines.

7. You fail to see the "big picture" of commanding a military unit.

your words>

I am attempting to restrain myself from actually pulling out a Taser. You either are a low level political grunt or a Brown troll making a poor reflection of Brown.

Comparing Paul Hackett to a furniture mover is just so tasteless and simply suggestive of your ignorance. Let me enlighten you to the fact that carrying their back pack is just the basic task at hand. There is a larger scope of responsibility as a commanding officer.....soldier's lives are on the line...some will live, some may die. Implimenting detailed strategies, establishing trust with troops under his command, leading the troops into battle all are just a few special skills Paul Hackett has exercised successfully. Here is a link for ya... I don't know any furniture movers who have this scope of responsibility.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Hackett#Background

Hackett saw active duty in the Corps from 1989 to 1992, and then joined the Select Marine Corps Reserve. In 2004, he volunteered for active duty in the Iraq War, spending seven months as a civil affairs officer with the 4th Civil Affairs Group of the 1st Marine Division. He was assigned to Ramadi and supported the Fallujah campaign and reconstruction efforts there. On 12 October 2004, a convoy under his command was hit by two roadside bombs, but Hackett was uninjured. He returned to Ohio in early 2005.

12. You're out of line
"I am attempting to restrain myself from actually pulling out a Taser. You either are a low level political grunt or a Brown troll making a poor reflection of Brown."

I'm really shocked and disappointed in any Ohio Dem who talks that way. You're hurting your own credibility and that of Hackett also.

11. And Brown has even more experience
including a proven track record of supporting the right issues in Congress.

No offense to Hackett, but I'd prefer to see how he operates at the state level before sending him to Congress.

10. Hackett had better be careful
Next time they'll probably turn on him to endorse a Republican candidate.

With this kind of move, UAW has lost a lot of respect and credibility. This isn't a criticism of Hackett, I like him, its a criticism of the UAW and their inability to stick with candidates who support them in favor of supporting a candidate who is an unknown quantity to them.

I could understand their support of Hackett if his opponent was someone who didn't support labor. I'm sure its another in a long line of decisions they'll come to regret.

4. Downsize This! Michael Moore, 1997
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 08:32 AM by TheBorealAvenger
p131
Douglas Fraser of the United Auto Workers was so stupid that, when he was president of the union in the early eighties, he accepted a seat on the Chrysler board of directors so he could be a "watchdog on the board." While Fraser was watchdogging on behalf of his union, Chrysler closed twenty factories and three parts depots, eventually firing more than 50,000 people! Remind me never to ask this guy to watch my house while I'm away.

The next president of the UAW, Owen Bieber, was so stupid that, in 1987, he signed an "attrition agreement" with General Motors. For every two people who retired, died, or quit, GM would only have to replace one of them. Bieber decided it was better to decrease the membership of his union and then have the remaining members working faster, harder, and longer than ever before. The year he agreed to this, GM was already making a profit of $3.6 billion.

***
Other union leaders have also stupidly fallen for this trend of "cooperation" with management called "Quality of Work Life." It is nothing more than an effort to find new ways to eliminate jobs and bust unions.
In another blast of official union stupidity, Lane Kirkland, the recently dethroned head of the AFL-CIO, decided that the best way to oppose the North American Free Trade Agreement was to do so by quietly lobbying Congress. So along came Ross Perot and Pat Buchanan to fill his void and spearhead a very public movement against NAFTA. By stupidly surrendering the issue to these two nutcases, Kirkland allowed Clinton to appear rational, and the President was able to get NAFTA passed.
Union leaders are so stupid that, since the late seventies, they have continually agreed to cut their members' wages and benefits simply because the company asked them to! The companies have taken the newfound savings, and instead of creating more jobs in the United States, they've built new plants overseas, resulting in the firing of the very American workers who gave them that money!

In my hometown of Flint, Michigan, the UAW leadership was so stupid that they actively lobbied the city council to grant General Motors tax abatements that, over the last twenty years, have given them tax breaks on $1.8 billion worth of property. They did so because they believed GM would create new jobs if given the tax breaks. Instead, GM eliminated more than 40,000 jobs in that period in Flint-and hasn't given a dime of its tax savings back to the city.
***
This progress all came to an end on August 5, 1981, when President Ronald Reagan fired 11,400 striking air traffic control workers and permanently replaced them, an event unheard of in U.S. history. From that day on, the union movement has been on a downward slide to oblivion. Labor union leaders, in the stupidest moment in their history, refused to call for a general, nationwide strike that would have shut the country down until Reagan rehired the controllers. Union members crossed picket lines and continued to fly. I remember refusing to get on a plane for the next eight months-and having a hard time persuading others to do likewise. Boy, walking from Michigan to L.A. was a bitch! So I gave up and started to fly.

I don't know if the IUE has endorsed yet, they represent the 17000 or so Delphi workers in Warren and Dayton.
edit:1997!

8. Ohio Unions Look Ridiculous Again
No big surprise that one of Ohio's major unions opts to look disorganized and bitter yet again. While I consider myself pro-union, it is becoming increasingly difficult to defend them when they stab their biggest defender in the back.

Of course, the unions were useless in 2004, so maybe it doesn't matter either way.
