Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell will challenge U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler
Councilman to run as independent

ASHEVILLE — Councilman Cecil Bothwell is mounting a challenge to Rep. Heath Shuler for the 11th Congressional District.

Bothwell will run as an independent in 2012, facing Shuler and an as-yet-unknown Republican nominee. He announced his bid Sunday on a new campaign website, www.Bothwell4Congress.wordpress.com.

“In the 30-some years that I've lived in Buncombe County, I haven't felt well represented in Congress,” Bothwell said Sunday. “Sometimes, if you want to get something done, you arrive at the conclusion that you have to do it yourself.”

Bothwell's decision to withdraw his name from the race to become Buncombe County Democratic Party chairman hastened the announcement, which he had planned on making in the fall. As it is, the campaign website is bare of campaign information, something Bothwell indicates will be unrolled in the not so distant future.

..more..

my note:
Bothwell is the most progressive member on Asheville CC

1. Awesome! I know Bothwell. I hope he wins.
Even he splits the vote and a reuke wins, I support his running. Shuler is the worst of the worst of the blue dogs. He is a fucking repuke in dem clothing. I would trade him for a one-term repuke to unseat in 2014.

Go Bothwell!

3. The district elected Chainsaw Charlie for many years. After the Republicans redraw the
district lines before the 2012 election, it will be even harder for Dems to win the district. I often disagree with Shuler -- but Chainsaw Charlie really set my teeth on edge

It's stupid to have this primary fight, no matter how much folk like Bothwell: look at the district history

4. Excellent news!! I'll be supporting Cecil, for sure. Shuler is a nightmare, which
was obvious before he ever set foot in the Capitol.

Now I know where my first contribution for the 2012 election is going. :D
