1. Snow and ice make changing speed and direction harder
If you're on snow or ice, try to leave adequate room between you and the car in front of you: I prefer to slow down and let the engine do much of the braking, if possible

As a general rule, don't expect to start or stop quickly and don't expect to be able to steer around something suddenly

If the road really is covered with ice, 10-15 mph may be the safest top speed; if there are only small irregular patches, the situation is usually much less dangerous

Special concern: bridges and overpasses freeze earlier and often stay frozen longer than other roadway

2. thank you
i intend to be suitably cautious. i have two 2-lane country roads to go down before i get to the 540. after that i'm home free. first of course i have to dig the car out of the snow!

4. Some transplanted Northerners have made fun of our inability to drive in a little snow, but more and
more I am hearing from some transplants that they are inexperienced and find it more difficult to deal with black ice than with Northern roads that have been cleared of large snowfalls.
