Holy shit! John Boehner was in Saratoga today!
Edited on Fri Aug-20-10 10:34 PM by Rhiannon12866
I just heard this on the local news. Apparently, he came all the way up here to headline a fundraiser for Chris Gibson, a right-winger who's planning to run against Democratic Congressman Scott Murphy (NY-20) in November. I thought I felt a disturbance in The Force... x(

I saw Gibson for Congress signs in a storefront in downtown Glens Falls earlier this week and meant to look him up. I worked on the Scott Murphy campaign last year during the special election to fill Kirsten Gillibrand's seat, and I've already been contacted to do canvassing, so I should have been paying better attention...

The odd thing is that there's no mention of this event in The Saratogian, just a LTTE about a protest that someone was organizing. Wish I'd known... I'll include the only article that I found on the event. The comments are pretty amusing. People want to know where Boehner played golf...

Top Republican John Boehner campaigns in NY-20

August 20th, 2010 by Brian Mann

If Republicans do very, very well this November, Ohio's John Boehner could be the next House Speaker in Washington.

He's hoping that Chris Gibson can help with that job. Gibson is retired Army colonel from Columbia County who is challenging Glens Falls Democrat Rep. Scott Murphy.

Boehner plans to attend a fundraiser for Gibson tonight in Saratoga Springs.

According to the Glens Falls Post-Star, "Boehner will speak only with campaign donors."

1. There were some demonstrations
planned, I couldn't go and haven't heard how it went.
I'm not working for Murphy this time. His voting record is terrible.
I have done canvassing for Yepsen and plan on doing more. We need to get another dem in the NYS Senate. Susan Savage is good too and I hope she gets in.

2. I read about the demonstration in The Saratogian, after the fact.

I was looking for some mention of Boehner's appearance, but that was all I could find and I thought that was odd. I like Scott Murphy, though he's certainly more conservative than I'd like, but in this area we're fortunate just to have a Democrat. We came dangerously close to having that nut job Tedisco, probably just because he's a Republican. x(

I've met Scott Murphy, worked on his campaign, as I said, and he has several things going for him. First, he's very intelligent, something that you couldn't say about previous congressmen *sigh*, and he's also dead serious, not a bad thing, either, for a member of Congress. I also think he's teachable, since he's determined to do the right thing. He started out taking on Kirsten Gillibrand's positions on everything and it's going to take awhile for him to find his own way. :)

I don't think we have the same NYS Senator. I have Betty Little... :(

I think that's his name. Never got a piece of mail or letter saying what he has done (because he has done nothing).

I've met Murphy a couple of times and not impressed. I asked him if he thought health care was a right or a privilege and he looked like a deer caught in headlights. Blustered his way through an answer that never answered anything. Just so much time available and Joanne is getting it here. I will vote for him because there is no other choice.

Isn't Betty Little a kind of old school republican? Has she been taken in by the don't vote with dems because it will look like they did something crowd?

4. Here's the LTTE from The Saratogian.
I found it late on Friday after I saw Boehner's appearance on the Channel 6 news, so looked to see if the local paper had covered it. They didn't. I was surprised, since this is big news for Saratoga. The comments on just the LTTE were pretty nasty, very discouraging. :(

I like Scott Murphy well enough, think he's much better than others that we have/could be saddled with, Sweeney or Tedisco. Yikes! Kirsten Gillibrand is enormously popular here and he took on her positions after receiving her support. I don't agree with all of them, but think she did quite well for us. I was actually astounded when she won in 2006 after years of Sweeney running unopposed...

I think of Scott Murphy as still a newbie, and am willing to give him a chance. We could and have done so much worse... And this is a historically Republican area.

As for Betty Little, she certainly is old school. She's been in for ages and is one of those local Republicans who continue to run unopposed. :(

5. Chuck Schumer will be at the fair today 5-5:30ish.
And Scott will be there 6ish. Just FYI. I can't go tonight out of town company for dinner. Maybe they would settle for fried twinkies and maple sugar cotton candy/ Hmmm...
