Help in finding a hotel room in NYC in late May
I hope you don't find this request too trivial but I'm planning a trip to NYC in late May and can't find a reasonably price hotel room. The least expensive I've found is around $170. Is anything available in the 125 to 150 range? Where do you send your relatives when they're in town? What is the best resource for finding a room? I've tried NY Times.
The hotel I used to stay at has been converted to residential and I understand that has happened to some of the more reasonably priced places.

1. If you don't mind staying in a "pension" like Europeans do. . .
there is a place in Greenwich Village within walking distance to subways and busses (at 14th Street)
The Larchmont Hotel:

I don't know if they have converted or not, so it might be worth trying.

2. Thanks
I actually came across this hotel from a search at NYTimes.com. Unfortunately it didn't have anything for the time I wanted. Let me know if you hear of anything else.

3. try hotwire.com, you won't know the name of the place till you book it
but it really will be the location/ amneties/ quality exactly as described and a good 40% off . Have used it in a few major cities, gotten excellent deals at nice places.

4. Why not try the outer boroughs?

Many tourists have a skewed understanding of the geography of New York and believe they have to stay in Manhattan.

You can stay in Brooklyn or Queens for much less, and can be in Manhattan in 15 - 20 minutes by subway.

A quick google brought up two hotels in Park Slope, Brooklyn, one of the most beautiful, fashionable and safe neighborhoods in New York, with rates in your range.

The one on Prospect Park sounds fantastic, and there are few more beautiful places in the region.

5. I'll try them
I'm not a tourist. I grew up in NYC but left when when I was 29. I'm now thinking of moving back. I will definitely follow up on these leads.

6. OMG! I'm soooooo sooory!
I know the worst insult you can give a New Yorker, even a relocated one, is to call him or her a tourist. Sorry!
