Crowds cheer as police raid funeral home, find drugs
November 4, 2005, 2:44 PM EST

GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. -- People cheered and sang the COPS theme Thursday night after police raided a funeral home they say doubled as a crack house and where frantic suspects were found tossing crack cocaine into caskets.

Steven E. Blomquist, 48, the owner of Hollenbeck Funeral Home was charged with felony counts of drug possession and criminal nuisance and misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Police said his girlfriend's two daughters were in the funeral home at the time of the raid.

Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira said a seven-month investigation determined the couple ran an "extensive" drug ring out of the funeral home, selling to local users. The funeral home also had been the subject of complaints including people finding seminude corpses in plain view or finding people sleeping in some of the rooms, Sira said.

"It's a crack house," Sira told the Gloversville Leader-Herald.

2. Actually, the idea
of the funeral home folks throw packs of crack cocaine into the coffins cracked me up.

6. I never understood why they chose a theme song...

...with an alliteration to shooting cops in it. Not that it glorifies it, but it's something you think they'd steer clear of.

3. Did they get this idea from the HBO show "The Wire"
Avon Barksdale's gang relocated to a funeral home in the show's last season.

4. Just imagine how far the "dress code" fell for that funeral home, unless
somehow the proprietors got the crackheads to wear suits and ties and other business attire.

And imagine being unaware of what was going on there, and hiring those folks for your loved one's funeral!

5. This is relatively common
In South Texas, funeral homes have been known to cross over into Mexico, buy dead bodies and stuff them with drugs. They go over on the precept of "picking up loved ones."

Disgusting, but true.
