Between 107 and 108 on Amsterdam!! It's official...I won't have to sleep in the subway when I move in August! And whoever said that there were no places available in Manhattan was a liar. There are LOTS of places....it's just that some of them suck.:puke:

So it is time for me to wave goodbye to Seattle and embrace the East Coast.

Next Task: Where can I get a slice of pizza?

I'd love to hear from other NY DUer's. I can use all the tips/ advice you've got!

2. I did the reverse move many years ago.

I moved from NYC to Seattle a while ago. I'm thinking of going back. How much are apartments on the UWS going for these days? Also, you're in the shadows of Columbia U. There should be a lot of young people in your area.

8. Gotta love rent....

I actually got a place for $680 a month, and its a BIG room with a nice big window. The catch is that its railroaded (i.e. there is another room behind mine and the only way to get to that room is to walk though mine). Ya, that should be fun. :crazy: :sarcasm:

3. Congratulations.

Get yourself a copy of the Time Out restaurant guide, the new one should be coming out around August or September. It is much more detailed than Zagats. In fact, subscribe to Time Out NY for the best listings in town. (No I don't work for them.)

Do the monthly metro pass unless you can walk to work.

Have fun but watch your budget. Too many places are ripoffs especially bars with 10 and up drinks. You should have some places in your area that might be cheaper since students are there.

I've heard Time Out is a good one. Luckily my job provides me a monthly metro pass....man those things are gold...especially since I keep taking the wrong train. :)

My big worry is that I'll miss all the green of the Northwest. Amazingly enough the part of Amersterdam I live on actually has planted trees!!! Plus, I'm not that far from Central Park. What I really want to know is are there any good weekend escapes for camping, hiking, etc.??

5. Im a newbie to the UWS too

Ive lived in the village for the past 5 years, but I cant afford rent down there anymore, so Im on 63rd and amsterdam! Hey neightbor ;)

I'd hardly call you a newbie though! I've heard that once you've spent your first solid week in Manhattan, you're either a New Yorker or you're not. 63rd and Amsterdam is a nice neighborhood from what little I've seen of the island. What I can't get over is how fast the communities change from block to block. I looked at a place on 140th and Fredrick Douglas and on my way walking back to 110th it was like I crossed into a whole different country once I got past 123rd. I then walked over to Amsterdam and again, it seemed like the whole vibe of the neighborhood changed. Manhattan is one diverse and compact place!

9. Congrats! Do you like Greek food? If so, there is a place..

called the Symposium on 113th bet Bway & Amsterdam which is pretty decent.It's been there for decades, and is a few steps down from street level.

I'm NYC born & raised.The hospital where I was born is now an expensive apartment building with a landmarked exterior - only in NY!I live in Stuyvesant Town, which is a large housing complex just north of the East Village where I grew up. That's at 14th Street, all the way on the east side. (I'm a block from the East River.) I went to grad school at Columbia and worked at St. Luke's-Roosevelt, which is on 114th & Amsterdam, but my work location was down at the Roosevelt division in midtown.When I went to Columbia, I commuted from home so I did not hang out in the area much.

I like a website called http://newyork.citysearch.com for quick searchs. You can put in your address as the home base and search for things from there.

Cross Street: Between 110th and 111th Streets.

There is a nice looking park just east of you, called Morningside Park, which at one time was quite dangerous to go into. I've heard recently that that has changed but you might want to check that out first before going on any excursions there.

Where will you be working or going to school? I recall the Broadway local (the 1 or 9) which stops near you being abt the slowest train in the system!
