The Plaza Hotel: On-line petitions to save this historic hotel
Probably those living in the heart of NYC are already aware of this, but I was horrified and shocked when I discovered that the new owners of this beautiful landmark plan on gutting the inside to make way for high-end condos. You see, only the FACADE is designated as a historic landmark right now which leaves the door open for destroying the interior.

I have stayed in Manhattan many times in my life, including The Plaza, and I am dismayed at the thoughts of losing one of NYC's greatest historic treasures.

I found two action websites, both with petition drives. I signed both since I'm not sure which group will be more effective in this fight. Jesse Jackson is now involved in this fight too.

Demolition Plans

Elad Properties is planning to convert New York’s flagship hotel into luxury condominiums and a three to four-story department store. The 800-plus room hotel is scheduled to close in April. It will re-open next year with 200 condominiums, and multilevel retail space -- although the retailers could be anyone, from Tiffany’s to Wal-Mart. Who knows?

Please take the time to review the websites below and sign the petitions. Thank you.

1. Are you Kidding!?
This hotel is history, inside and out.

The Donald or some Saudi Prince needs to save this thing.

2. Sadly, this is not a joke
Only the facade is designated as historic right now so the new owners plan to gut the inside for condos and multi-level retail space.

They plan on starting demolition in APRIL 2005.

Destroying history for short-sighted and selfish greed.

4. As long as the outside is preserved, I'm fine with it.
It's not a big issue on my list to preserve the interior of a hotel that the vast majority of people could not afford to stay at anyway.
