Anyone here as mad as hell?
Cause I sure am. After reading the release of the "new memo" bush has been suppressing, I don't know how much more I can stomach. Before, if you said bush ignored 9/11 warnings, you were into "conspiracy theories". I think thats been put to rest, forever. 52 warnings about Bin Laden or al-Qa'ida given and ignored. Bush literally pushing Richard Clarke out of the loop, and both he & Rice refusing to meet with him. A PDB that bush ignored in August: "Bin Laden Determined to Attack in the United States" to go on vacation.

Just reading an excellent article with remarks by Kristen Breitweiser:

"Bush team tried to suppress pre-9/11 report into al-Qa'ida" http://news.independent.co.uk/low_res/story.jsp?story=609895&host=3&dir=70

and

January 2001 Memo Warned Bush of Al Qaeda Threat"

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=7600332

He left us unprotected & had the gall to come here in August and "cry" about 9/11 every other sentence. And not just bush, all of them.

Is it just me, or have you ever seen a case for impeachment as good as this one? How much more incompetent could a president be? Interested in your responses.

5.  robbedvoter what is new is this
Before the information we wanted out was suppressed. It isn't anymore. It's out there for everyone to see. Did bush ignore pre 9/11 warnings? Yes, Yes, he did, no question about that anymore. Did Rice lie like the rug on top of Trent Lott's head? Why yes, yes she did...no question. "Of the FAA's 105 daily intelligence summaries between 1 April 2001 and 10 September 2001, 52 of them mentioned Osama bin Laden, al-Qa'ida, or both.

Kristen is right: "the newly released details undermined testimony from Condoleezza Rice, the former national security adviser, who told the commission that information about al-Qa'ida's threats seen by the administration was "historical in nature".

"There were 52 threats that were mentioned. These were present threats - they were not historical. There were steps that could have been taken. Marshals could have been put on planes that spring. Condoleezza Rice's testimony is undermined."

Thats whats new.

3. Perhaps I am mistaken...
...but didn't 19 airports have the FAA come in with some type of CD-ROM presentation because of the warnings? I'd be interested to find out what those CD-ROMS contained. IS that info. available anywhere? I haven't seen it.

8. Unfortunately the Bush administration has half of the country under fear
control from 9/11 and anthrax and Saddam, and they have all three branches of power plus the media.

All the Dems can do at this point is try to speak loudly and truthfully. Howard Dean will help, but it is going to be a rough few years ahead.

incompetent and a liar, would sure make Howard Deans's job alot easier. And it certainly would be truthful, if they speak up loudly.

Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 09:35 PM by MissWaverly
everyone has seen a professional fumble a field goal or miss a shot at the hoop what if you let something like 911 slip by, would you then capitalize on to use it for your personal advantage, that's beyond cruel, beyond corrupt, how can we have any trust in this man, how can politicians talk about working out a "compromise" with him,
I am glad that Kerry refused to stand up for him. Open up the machines, no more years!

10. Just saw this on CommonDreams: Waxman & Maloney calling for
Reps. Waxman and Maloney Call for Hearings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FEBRUARY 10, 2005
3:19 PM
CONTACT: Rep. Henry A. Waxman
Karen Lightfoot, 202-225-5051

WASHINGTON -- February 10 -- Today Rep. Waxman and Rep. Maloney ask for hearings on whether political considerations caused the Administration to delay release of findings by the 9/11 Commission about pre-attack warnings. The text of the letter follows:

The Honorable Tom Davis Chairman
Committee on Government Reform
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman:

We are writing to request that our Committee hold hearings to investigate two extremely serious questions raised by an article that appeared in this morning's New York Times. The first question is whether the Administration misused the classification process to withhold, for political reasons, official 9/11 Commission staff findings detailing how federal aviation officials received multiple intelligence reports warning of airline hijackings and suicide attacks before September 11. The second question relates to the veracity of statements, briefings, and testimony by then-National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice regarding this issue.

Background

This morning's New York Times reported that in "the months before the Sept. 11 attacks, federal aviation officials reviewed dozens of intelligence reports that warned about Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda, some of which specifically discussed airline hijackings and suicide operations."<1> The article explained that the Federal Aviation Administration "received 52 intelligence reports" that mentioned Osama bin Laden or Al Qaeda prior to September 11, 2001, and that the FAA warned airports that if "the intent of the hijacker is not to exchange hostages for prisoners, but to commit suicide in a spectacular explosion, a domestic hijacking would probably be preferable."

This information was included in a staff report by the 9/11 Commission dated August 26, 2004. The 9/11 Commission report found that there was "intelligence that indicated a real and growing threat leading up to 9/11," but that this intelligence "did not stimulate significant increases in security procedures." Although the report did not find that the government had advance information about the specific September 11, 2001, attacks, it reported that the FAA took various measures to warn airport security officials about "the possibility of a suicide hijacking."

Declassification Process

The first question Committee hearings should address is whether the Bush Administration abused the classification process to improperly withhold the 9/11 Commission findings from Congress and the public until after the November elections and the confirmation of Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State. Although the 9/11 Commission staff completed its report on August 26, 2004, the Bush Administration refused to declassify the findings until January 28, 2005, less than 48 hours after Ms. Rice was confirmed as Secretary of State.<2> At that time, the Department of Justice delivered both a classified version and an unclassified version to the National Archives, the agency charged with collecting and retaining all 9/11 Commission documents.

During the period between August 26 and January 28, the Administration was reportedly reviewing the Commission's report to determine whether it contained any information that should be classified in the interest of national security. Problems with this process had been raised previously by the 9/11 Commission.<3>

The Committee should investigate the process by which the Administration handled the declassification, redaction, and release of this 9/11 Commission report. Specifically, the Committee should investigate the following questions:

(1) What was the process for declassifying, redacting, and releasing this report, and who specifically was responsible for these actions?

(2) Were there political considerations behind the declassification, redaction, or timing of the release of the report?

(3) What were the specific rationales for each redaction in the report? Were these redactions appropriate?

On December 2, 2004, we joined with Rep. Christopher Shays, Chairman of the National Security Subcommittee, and 23 other members in a letter to Attorney General John Ashcroft specifically requesting the 9/11 Commission report at issue.<4> We noted that "there have been a number of calls for its release, to no avail," and we expressed concern that "politics may be playing a role in its release." This specific congressional request was apparently ignored by the Administration. When the staff report was declassified on January 28 and sent to the National Archives, no notice was provided to us.

had a tape from NY Supreme Court, I think. The 2 lawyers representing their case were from Family's of 9 11 and the NY Times. I missed most of it but I think they were asking for access to tapes from the first responders and some other agency maybe the FAA. Did anyone catch that? I checked their schedule and didn't see it listed.

11. REDSTATELIBERAL yes, article here:

Court to decide access to 9/11 tapes

BY GRAHAM RAYMAN
STAFF WRITER
February 9, 2005, 7:03 PM EST

ALBANY -- The state's highest court heard arguments Wednesday in a two-year struggle over access to a trove of city transcripts and tape recordings from Sept. 11, 2001.

At issue before the Court of Appeals is access to tapes of 911 calls, Fire Department dispatches and transcripts of interviews with hundreds of firefighters who responded on the day of the attack.

The New York Times filed the lawsuit after the city declined to release the items. The paper was later joined by relatives of civilians and firefighters who died at the World Trade Center.

In fighting the suit the city has cited privacy issues, concern over the emotions of the grieving and the ongoing terror prosecution of Zacarias Moussaoui in Virginia.

"The burden of proof is on the city," Norman Siegel, a lawyer representing the families, said, adding that the city did not consult "a single family member" before refusing to release the items.

John Hogrogian, a lawyer for the city, did not deny that.

15. Thanks I read the article
I will be watching for the ruling. Something has to break through all this stonewalling. It is so frustrating for me I don't know how the families can deal with it. I am so proud of them. Those tapes could help in the future as far as the response teams as well as adding insight to the whole catastrophe.

What is going to make me even crazier is when my husband hears it on the MSM and tells me about it like it's news, when I've already told him this because I've been getting my news from the *internets* for years and knew this a long time ago!!

16. Suppressing the report is impeachable.
Bad enough that they ignored Clarke and blew off the PDB of August 6.

Bad enough they fought the creation of the 9/11 commission and then underfunded it.

Bad enough they declassified a memo that Gorelick had written just so they could blame Clinton.

Bad enough they had their convention in NYC to open up that wound every way possible.

Bad enough that references to 9/11 were made incessantly on the campaign trail, in the debates, and even the inaguraral speech.

But to suppress this information for purely political reasons (Gov. Keane has said this) until after the elections??? Are you serious?

He needs to be impeached. It won't happen as long as the idiots are running Congress and the media is afraid to speak up. But impeachment is the fate they all deserve.

17. I am sick over this
My husband was a NYC firefighter, disabled by the clean-up (remember Christie Whitman telling them the air was "fine"?) and I am so angry I don't know what to do about it. I am going to NYC on the war protest day, and I would like to contact all of the disable firemen (over 1100 of them) and band together to protest the incompetence of this administration. And the lies we have been told since them. I am trying to figure out how to do this, any ideas, greatly appreciated.
