Please Help New York City Pet Owners and Pets
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 09:28 AM by Solitaire
Intro #189 Is important for all senior citizens and anyone who would like to keep a pet in an apartment.

Intro #189 will allow anyone who’s previously had a pet in an apartment, condo or co-op the right to continue to do so when a beloved pet passes away. (under present law, your landlord can change that policy at anytime).

-This bill will help save dog’s and cat's lives as it will not allow landlords to change the pet ownership rules on tenants, who were previously allowed pets. More dogs and cats will be adopted!
-This bill will help the elderly people who might like to have companionship.
-This bill will help all of us to have a more "Humane New York"!

This bill has been floating around for a few years. It was originally #380 and was assigned a new number in 2003. There have been hearings, but the council members have not set a date to vote on it.

We are trying to gain support for this and ask that you help by calling and writing:

MADELINE PROVENZANO, CHAIR OF HOUSE & BLDS COMMITTEE: (*IMPORTANT: THIS IS WHERE THE BILL IS CURRENTLY RESIDING)
email: provenzano@council.nyc.ny.us
Address: 2931 Westchester Avenue, Bronx, NY 10461
Phone: 718/931-6060

SPEAKER GIFFORD MILLER
email: Miller@council.nyc.ny.us
address: 336 E. 73 Street, Suite C, New York, NY 10021
phone: 212/535-5554

COUNCILWOMAN MELINDA KATZ (who is sponsoring the bill – please thank her)
email: katz@council.nyc.ny.us
Address: 104-01 Metropolitan Ave., Queens, NY 11375
phone: 718/544-8800

Please also contact your own council members and ask them to please vote in favor of this bill . You must be a New York City resident to participate.

In addition, you might also call the following with your support of this bill:

Tony Avella 718 747 2137
Gale Brewer 212 873 0282
Leroy Comrie 212 788 7084
Lewis Fidler 718 241 9330
James Oddo 212 788 7159
Diana Reyna 718 963 3141
Joel Rivera 212 788 6966
Kendall Stewart 718 951 8177

Please be proactive and pass on to anyone you know that might like to help.

Also, please feel free to message me here with questions.

Thanks so much!

:-)

3. Done!
I have sent off the three emails and I will make the calls on Monday morning, plus I will make a call to my own Councilwoman, Christine Quinn.

My chubby little toy poodle will be ten years old on Nov. 16. Her twin sister died of congestive heart failure in July of 2001 and Babbi is my ONLY comfort. As a lung cancer survivor, my pet is vital to my keeping a positive attitude about life.

4. thank you itzamirakul!
I'm so grateful for the responses I've gotten here.

I'm really hoping that you all pass the word and that more DU'ers get invovled.

This is a really good and important cause. Animals really do make our lives better and we could be doing a lot more to return the favor.

Good wishes to you and God bless.

6. Is this something that we all can participate in?
I live Upstate, and take part in many "actions" supporting animal protection laws in NY State.

7. unfortunately....
this one is just for the city.

I did hear that one will be coming up to help senior citizens so that they can have a companion after age 65, no matter what their landlord says.

This is very important, especially for seniors, so please help if you can!

Thanks :)

9. I haven't received this as one of my "actions," so I wondered.
This is very important, so thanks for posting it. I take part in "actions" for both animals and seniors, so I'll help, if I can!:-)

11. I'll check my ASPCA action center and some other places
New York State is known for the strong animal protection laws that we have in place, and there are new ones coming up in the Assembly and House, all the time. My sweet little dog, Sara, was rescued in Ohio, where she was scheduled to be gassed. Believe it or not, they still do that in some places. She found me after she was brought to New York, via a kind of "underground railroad" of kind young people, who ferry dogs to rescue groups in New York and Vermont where we have stronger animal protection laws. But we need even stronger laws in place. I'm on board.:-)

12. I checked and think that this is the issue that you refer to

I received this from the ASPCA and already took "action." You may want to post this separately, since it is very easy to support legislation through their site.:-)
