Voter rolls reach record high
By Steve Ramirez
Sep 24, 2004, 07:30 am

The number of registered voters in New Mexico has surpassed 1 million, a record-setting mark, according to a state elections official.

“We’ve passed the million mark for the first time ever in the state’s history,” Denise Lamb, director of the New Mexico Bureau of Elections said Thursday. “It’s a little mind-boggling when you consider that according to last U.S. census figures there were about 1.4 million people in New Mexico that are eligible to register.”

According to the 2000 U.S. census, New Mexico’s population was 1,819,046.

(snip)

Lamb said county clerks throughout the state have been especially busy in recent days processing all of the new voter registrations.
“We’ve been busy, very busy,” said Doña Ana County Clerk Rita Torres. “We’re getting people coming in here in waves. We’ll get a rush of people, and then it calms down, and then it starts up again.”

4. That means that NM will be BLUE
as a native N.Mexican, I can attest to the dem (highly Catholic) leanings in the state. I was there this summer. 4-1 Kerry signs/ bumperstickers, and according to family the #'s are now even higher for Kerry.

5. This is a republican nightmare
Republicans hate it when people actually want to exercise their right to vote.
