Shocker: 'Star-Ledger' Endorses Independent in New Jersey Gov Race

Published: October 11, 2009 2:00 PM ET

NEWARK Independent candidate Chris Daggett has picked up a key endorsement in New Jersey's gubernatorial race.

The Star-Ledger of Newark, the state's largest daily newspaper, gave Daggett its backing in an editorial published Sunday. It cited the need for "radical change" in how state government operates, saying Daggett's election would repudiate the status quo and put "a highly qualified occupant" in the governor's office.

"(Our) decision is less a rejection of Gov. Jon Corzine and Republican Chris Christie than a repudiation of the parties they represent, both of which have forfeited any claim to the trust and confidence of the people of New Jersey," the editorial stated. "They share responsibility for the state's current plight."

2. Whoa, mama!
Most people don't realise the Star leger is influential with older voters. They DO 'get out' in N.J. and they swing that state.

IMO the only hope we have in America is to show both parties we aren't tied to either.

5. I thought they were in the bag for Christie...
Honestly, I get the Ledger and mostly read sports, entertainment, etc. and largely get my political news on-line. But I would read the front page and the front section just to get the top line stuff.

It seemed to me that I would be reading and hearing about major Christie scandals or potential ethics things on line at places like TPM but then see nothing about them in the Ledger, which is where you would THINK they would cover something like that. Especially since I saw numerous similar things reported about Corzine.

6. By this time next year
the Ledger will only be an on line publication. The paper is about finished.
