N.J. witness protection out of money
New Jersey's witness protection program has run out of money, causing dismay among law enforcement officials in locales that have faced repeated problems with witness intimidation.

"This is one of the biggest challenges facing law enforcement, and I find it to be a really scary one," Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow said in a publisher report.

Peter Aseltine, spokesman for the state Attorney General's Office, said the witness assistance program is funded by a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, but the grant expires in July and isn't to be renewed.

Judy Gagliano, chief assistant prosecutor in Essex County, said the state program has virtually ceased to exist. Essex County receives most of the program's funding and was told months ago no more was available, she said.
