Andrew P. Nittoso Jr., a former Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority chairman, says he feels like he won the war, but the fight has taken its toll. The measurable toll in the "war" — sparked by the revelation that another former chairman's business had not been billed for sewer service — is Nittoso's resignation from the authority before his term expired and the current executive director giving up that job. Less quantifiable is the wear and tear on the individuals involved, their families and the image of Brick.

The authority voted Monday to approve a settlement agreement with Executive Director Kevin F. Donald, ending a lawsuit against the authority. Donald had alleged he was the target of retaliation after he cooperated with an Ocean County Prosecutor's Office investigation into why the plumbing business of Daniel F. Newman Sr., a former authority chairman and Democratic mayor, did not receive a sewer bill for almost 20 years.

"The politicos that orchestrated this debacle are now sitting in Township Council seats, on the Board of Commissioners at the BTMUA, and one of them would still like to be your next mayor," Nittoso said, apparently referring to Council President Stephen C. Acropolis, who was narrowly defeated in a mayoral bid in 2005.

"Their characters are certainly suspect, and they should be held accountable at the next election," Nittoso said.
