From Mexico at 16, to the Shore
Listening to the radio as a teenager, Marcelino Herrera had hoped that one day people would tune in to hear his voice. The childhood dream came true, though it didn't happen in his native Mexico.

On Friday nights, the 33-year-old Herrera can be heard from Red Bank to Lakewood on WYGG-FM, a nonprofit station run out of a city office on Bangs Avenue. Herrera spins Reginal Mexicano, traditional tunes that are part of the Mexican pop scene.

The volunteer radio host says he plays the music for day laborers, his countrymen, who probably appreciate hearing familiar sounds after working a long day in an unfamiliar place. He also has guests on the show.
