Patti Schwartz was home bathing her dog Friday, when suddenly Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, appeared at her front door in Woodcliff Lake.

"Hi there!" Dean said, extending his hand.

Beside him was Paul Aronsohn, the Democrat hoping to unseat Rep. Scott Garrett in the 5th District, which spans four North Jersey counties and is considered a Republican stronghold.

Aronsohn, 40, spent a year as communications director for Gov. James E. McGreevey and before that worked at the State Department. Most recently, he held a public affairs job at pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, before resigning to concentrate on the race.

The candidate has been taking daily walks through the district, and Dean's presence Friday was a sign that the national party was taking his campaign seriously, ignoring political observers who have labeled the race as non-competitive.

Mostly ambivalent responses by the public.

1. As someone whose worked in the 5th
these responses do not surprise me. I wish him the best of luck in his long shot bid.

2. Paul may spend 3 million and lose. He pissed off a lot of DFA people
In North Jersey and in Essex, in fact his financial person told they were not interested in any out side the district endorsements. SO how do you get a DFA-NJ endorsement, try starting by getting a county DFA endorsement.

After what went down in the 5th with DFA, I cant get anyone to work for Pauls campaign.
