Must Have Struck a Nerve
Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 11:33 AM by Kire
September 11, 2005

I picked up the phone tonight and the man on the other end said his name was Congressman Scott Garrett. I almost didn't believe it. I asked him twice if he was kidding. After he confirmed it twice, it dawned on me that he didn't like the letter I wrote in today's Express-Times blasting him for voting against Katrina hurricane relief. He was pissed. He started explaining to me that the reason he voted that way was because there was no oversight of the relief agencies, and if I had heard his remarks on the floor of the House I would have known that. Like I said. Pissed.

He asked me to write another letter saying that I now understand why he voted the way he did. He said he doesn't want his family going around thinking he's a heartless son of a gun. But the tone of his phone call (pissed), and the fact that he called me at my home, doesn't lead me altogether away from that conclusion. Here's why:

1. He can justify his own actions. It's not your responsibility.
These guys are fucking creepy. They literally can't handle disagreement, to the point that they demand you write some letter that says "Now that I have been brainwashed, I understand the true greatness of Supreme Leader."

Screw that.

28. Typical Republican.
He said he doesn't want his family going around thinking he's a heartless son of a gun.

Uh...if you really aren't a heartless son of a gun wouldn't your family know that? Is your family going to change their opinion of you based on a total stranger's LTTE? He is more worried about the damage Katrina has done to his image than the damage Katrina has done to the residents of LA and MS.

61. Yeah, it seems to me HE should be the one to write that letter.
It isn't Kire's job to run PR for this guy. If he genuinely feels that he has been misrepresented, it is his responsibility to clear his name by explaining his actions before the public. I'm sure any paper would be thrilled to print an LTTE written by a U.S. official.

If he cared that much, he should have taken the time he spent badgering Kire to write his own damned letter.

Well, get this guy fired. He has huge boundary problems. Finnish him off, he's frightened to resort to calling you.

It's legal in NJ to record all calls if one party knows about it. This way, if he starts leaning on you more, you can turn the call over to the press.

And don't let this RepubliCON-artist fool you into thinking he's "worried about his family." He's worried about his political ass.

20. Remember people in Belvidere had trouble getting flood relief funds
while people on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware river got aid right away....

"Only a day into the flooding, on Sept. 19, Pennsylvania was granted aid by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help in the recovery of 46 of its counties, spanning from the Delaware to the state's western edges, which suffered an estimated $180 million in property damage. Accordingly, on Sept. 20, Governor McGreevey also appealed to the federal agency to provide relief for four counties in New Jersey -- Mercer, Warren, Sussex and Hunterdon -- and last week was still waiting for a reply."

One of my students worked as an intern in his office. I went out of my county (Essex) to do door knocking for his opponent a few years ago when he was up for election. I'd love to see that b%&$ard go.

I'd write another letter but you might not get it printed because most of the time you only get one letter printed every 30 days. But this phone call does deserve some "special recognition." One of us should write a letter about his accountability rationale and then bring up oversight of the Pentagon. I'm sure (without even checking) that he hasn't refused to vote on defense budgets because of the lack of accountability.

BTW, I would volunteer to write this letter but I'm swamped right now--teacher, first week of school.

Recommended! I hope that in your second letter you are able to get all the information he was referring to and integrate it into a larger picture of why the GOP has consistently slashed hurricane/flood preparedness programs, gutten FEMA in every way, sent OUR National Guard off to die in Iraq, and approved incompetent or outright legally/morally compromised Bush political cronies for critical government positions.

Excuse me but isn't it the job of CONGRESS and CONGRESSMEN to provide oversight of government agencies with their OVERSIGHT COMMITTEES. Oh and by the way dosen't oversight imply ACCOUNTABILITY. then the solution would be to create oversight.
But in so far that i know the RW, they'd probably argue oversight would be to expensive or to burocratic, much as they always seem to come up with some argument not why not to spend money on the public good.

(which comes across as passive bullying), and point out that apparently your previous LTTE struck a raw nerve, and by calling you in anger and expecting you to write another LTTE DEFENDING HIM (flip-flop orders from him), is a prime example of how the GOP operates using bullying tactics and passive/implicit threats.

PS Could you post here your original LTTE?

95. article in the New Jersey Herald
Two weeks ago, Rep. Scott Garrett, R-5, voted against $51.8 billion in emergency relief aid for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Last week, the Sussex County congressman made a significant effort to show how he is supporting the victims. His congressional office sent out news releases Wednesday and Thursday detailing seven hurricane-aid bills Garrett supports.

"Congress continues efforts to aid Hurricane Katrina victims; Garrett supports Hurricane Volunteer Protection Act," heralds the headline on one of the releases.

Garrett denied that last week's multiple news releases were sent in an effort to blunt criticism of his vote against the aid package.

"We send out press releases on legislation that we're involved with all the time," Garrett said Friday.

The congressman said he has heard more support than criticism from his constituents on his vote against the hurricane-aid package. His potential congressional opponents and other interested Democrats have strongly criticized him, but Garrett said he expected that.

And the congressman's efforts for the hurricane victims are doing little to quiet them.

w00t!

Garrett practices miserly politics

Kudos to Erik Anderson, who in a Sept. 11 letter questioned the priorities of U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett. There is absolutely no excuse for Garrett to vote against the Katrina relief bill. He can rationalize it anyway he wants, but the fact is the congressman is pathologically opposed to spending a penny on anything that might upset his "government-as-miser" politics.

Those of us in Warren County remember that Garrett lamely took undeserved credit for getting the federal government to help after last year's Delaware River flood -- and it did take him a while even to visit the stricken areas. The congressman was of no help to Belvidere and other areas which received no relief from Washington, D.C.

Based on Garrett's inaction after our own disasters, is it any surprise how he has reacted to Katrina?

My original letter did get printed in the Warren Reporter! :bounce:

And here's a story about Garrett's Hackettstown Town Hall meeting in the Express-Times today:

Garrett takes Katrina queries at public forum
Wednesday, September 21, 2005
By MATTHEW HALPIN
The Express-Times

HACKETTSTOWN -- Hurricane Katrina dominated a town forum held Monday by Congressman Scott Garrett at the Hackettstown Municipal Building.

Garrett, who represents the 5th District, answered questions from nearly two dozen residents about the losses caused by the disaster in the south and the financial undertaking about to take place.

"Our hearts go out to all the people devastated by the disaster," Garrett said. "Our country is unique in its compassion to the downtrodden."

Garrett was one of only 11 legislators to vote against the $51.8 billion relief bill on Sept. 8 for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Garrett said previously he voted against the bill because he opposed giving a blank check to Federal Emergency Management Administration without oversight on how it would be spent. By voting against the bill, Garrett has said, he was trying to make sure FEMA worked efficiently to assist people affected by the storm and its aftermath.

Garrett has proposed spacing the funds out and allocating them as needed to minimize unnecessary spending. Having started the Washington Waste Watchers organization as a freshman in Congress, Garrett says he is committed to fiscal responsibility.

Topics of the hour-and-a-half long town meeting Monday night also included eminent domain, immigration and homeland security.

Thin Skin
By Mary Ann Akers
Roll Call Staff
September 21, 2005

To be a successful Member of Congress, two things you must have are a tough hide and a tight lip. But Rep. Scott Garrett’s (R-N.J.) skin appears to be somewhere between a newborn baby’s bottom and a puppy’s belly, and his lip is about as loose as the streets of Las Vegas, judging from his reaction to a recent letter to the editor published in New Jersey’s Express-Times newspaper.

102. Garrett Phone Call Story in Sunday Herald
The story of the phone call was in Sunday's New Jersey Herald of Sussex County, page A9, under the Bear story. It's not available online. I'll transcribe it for you here:

Anyone seeking a personal phone call from Rep. Scott Garrett, R-5, may only have to write a letter to the editor criticizing him.

Hackettstown resident Erik Anderson wrote a letter denouncing Garrett for his vote against the $51.8 billion aid package for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and found the Sussex County congressman on the other end of his telephone a few days later. (NOT - it was that night).

"He was very pretty irritated (WTF!!)," said Anderson, who served as the western field director for Anne Wolfe, Garrett's Democratic apponent last year. "It was kind of scary, having someone call you up like that and ask you to recant your statement."

Eric Cullen, Garrett's spokesman, confirmed Friday that he made the call to Anderson, but said it wasn't as heated as Anderson described. He added that it was not out of the ordinary for Garrett to personally call constituents.

"Scott tried to bring him to some common ground," Cullen said. "He probably had a spirited discussion with him ... but I wouldn't characterize it anything beyond that."

So, now we have two independent sources...what do we do now?
