Corzine leads rivals in race for governor
Sunday, February 6, 2005

By JOSH GOHLKE
TRENTON BUREAU

In his bid to become governor, Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon S. Corzine enjoys a commanding lead over the two most likely Republican contenders, who remain deadlocked for their party's nomination, according to a poll by The Record.

The poll also found that voters are largely unmoved by some of the Republicans' leading criticisms of Corzine - his avid use of his personal wealth for political purposes, his voting record as a senator and his affiliation with a party marked by scandal in Trenton.

Of the seven Republicans running for governor, former U.S. Senate candidate Doug Forrester and former gubernatorial nominee Bret Schundler were in a statistical tie for the lead among likely Republican primary voters, with 35 percent and 34 percent of the vote, respectively. The five other candidates were far behind.

Corzine, who became the presumptive Democratic nominee last week when acting Governor Codey decided to stay out of the race, fared well against either of the Republican leaders. In hypothetical one-on-one contests, the voters surveyed chose Corzine over Schundler, 54 percent to 32 percent, and gave the senator a similar lead over Forrester, 53 percent to 31 percent.
