Looks like slow going ahead for new road signs
Litter details, graffiti cleaning and other tasks detour 'top priority'

Sunday, December 19, 2004
BY JOE MALINCONICO
Star-Ledger Staff

How long would it take the New Jersey Department of Transportation to put up 48 road signs on interstate highways around Trenton?

No one knows the answer yet.

Highway crews started erecting the signs in the summer of 2003, but they still haven't finished the job.

So far, officials say workers have installed about two-thirds of the 48 signs planned for Routes 195, 295 and 95.

What's taking so long? Well, transportation officials say road crews have been busy doing other tasks, like clearing litter, plowing snow, cleaning graffiti.

Despite the slow pace, the project has moved at warp speed compared with the transportation department's progress on improving road signs at other trouble spots.
