GOTV in Berlin

I haven't wanted to mention this before, because I didn't want to make ya'll jealous - but I'm running a GOTV operation in Berlin, in partnership with ACT. I know how you must be feeling - given that I got this plum assignment - and you did NOT - but please try to be gracious despite your desperate jealousy. }( tee hee

We've been canvassing all weekend, and my crew tells me that 98% of the voters they talk to plan not only to vote, but to vote for Kerry. They've only encountered about 4 Bush supporters, and a handful of "I'm not voting and you can't make me" types. I hear that Berlin is plastered with Kerry signs. They're very encouraged, and so am I.

We are making history in this election. The outpouring of volunteers is incredible. Busloads of people coming from MA, CT, RI, and NY. I have a bunch of Vermonters on my crew, and I had a carload of kids from Weslayan University for the weekend. A carload of kids from UVM came down today. A guy drove from NY to help, and was happy to come to Berlin. Another guy called my cell phone today (I have no idea how he got the #) - he was on a plane from Santa Monica to NH, sitting next to a guy who was flying someplace to work for ACT. Somewhere along the way he was inspired, so when he reached his destination he called me to offer to help. Now, I'm no one special, and neither is my GOTV operation. What's remarkable is that this is being duplicated all over the state.

I am cynical about politics, and Kerry wasn't my first choice (or my second....and so on) - BUT - as bitter and cynical as I am, what's happening around the country is amazing. It's inspiring, even to a grumpy old lefty like me.

We are making history, fellow New Hampsterers. I am thrilled to be part of this. Hope it's just as amazing for you. We can change the direction of our state, and our country.

5. Berlin - Berlin

Berlin had an unprecedented 92% turnout, complete with 708 newly registered voters. Yay!!

but all the local candidates seem to be losing. Kerry ahead, by a little and Lynch too. 90% turnout in Jackson. It really sucks however, that an asshole like Frank McCarthy could be elected because he's a Republican.
