Republicans Are Set On Slashing Social Programs
Republicans in control of the Belknap County Commission have proposed a budget for 2009 that slashes funding for outside programs and agencies, from the UNH Cooperative Extension and the Belknap County Economic Development Council, to Genesis Behavioral Health Services, the Restorative Justice Program, and even the Fire Departments' Mutual Aid program.

Laconia City Council Balks At Proposed County Budget Cuts, accusing the County Commission of trying to shift costs to municipalities. Ultimately, it will be the County Delegation that will determine the final budget, having the authority to approve or change the County Commission's recommendations. The Delegation consists of 18 NH House Representatives from the city of Laconia and from the towns throughout the county. On November 4, six Democrats were elected from the county to the NH House, and at least three of the Republicans are regarded as moderates who have historically supported the agencies and programs set for cuts.

The battle lines are drawn and Democrats and moderate Republicans must band together to stop this assault on crucial programs and agencies, particularly during these times of economic distress.

Concerned residents should contact their representatives.
