What sort of rocket scientist thought it as a good idea to invite Karl Rove, a man under investigation for leaking classified intelligence during a war, to be the honored guest at a party fundraiser?

This is remarkable, and pathetic. Any elected official who attends this thing should be held accountable for their tacit endosement of Rove's antics.
