ELKO - Dorothy North has held onto the chairmanship of the Elko County Democratic Central Committee but the committee has a new vice chairman: John Rice.

North was re-elected Saturday in a controversial election that angered Democrats who expected to be able to vote but weren't allowed to do so.

“The good thing that came out of it is there were a lot of people who showed up and expressed renewed interest in the Democratic Party,” North said Sunday.

Only a little more than 20 people actually cast their votes in the election, even though North said close to 100 people showed up for the start of the meeting.

“It was a disaster,” said Betti Magney, president of the Elko County Democratic Club. “The central committee voted not to let the people who came to cast their votes. I am ashamed of them.”

Democrats who received phone calls from North or the club urging them to come to the meeting and vote were upset when they found out at the meeting they couldn't vote.
