mutated fish found in Lake Holmes, Lincoln
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=115x37194

A fish with two mouths was caught in this lake. Map shows the lake is sourced by Antelope Creek (?) which flows from the southeast outside the city and continues on to some other streams north of it. Any heavy industry to the southeast, or known groundwater pollution near Holmes Park ? Two mouths would seem to be a birth defect, so there are teratogens somewhere in the water.

Greetings from New York! Learned some NE geography today... Ain't DU grand ? ;)

1. Holmes Lake is polluted
I lived in Lincoln until 2 months ago. A few years ago they actually drained the lake to try to clean it out. I wasn't aware there was even any water in it. Last time I was at Holmes Lake there were signs saying you shouldn't even touch the water.

I can't believe that moron was going to eat the fish. :dunce:

2. Rainbow Trout are stocked in this lake each fall and spring.
The trout are already a catchable size when stocked. This fish was only in the lake for a few months.

3. mutagens then ?

It's a stretch to me to see a major body structure like a jaw grow while the animal is in the adult phase. I'm not a biologist by any stretch of the imagination, but it don't make sense. Birth defect (embryonic mutation caused by teratogenic chemicals) yes, mutation while fully grown, hmmm.

thanks for the info !

4. I worked for a company once that did remediation work on contaminated
water all around NE and IA. This company mainly cleaned up petroleum contamination (because petroleum hydrocarbons are the easiest to deal with). Anyway, that's when I quit drinking water out of the tap. And since I know that bottle water comes from the ground as well, I don't drink much of that either.

We've done so much damage to our poor planet. Soon (if it hasn't already happened) we will have contaminated it beyond the point where we can repair the damage.
